La Cartara in the Taillard Forest

A breath of fresh air in the Taillard Forest and beautiful views of the Pilat massif and the Annonay Basin. In autumn, you might even come across a few porcini mushrooms!

Description of the walk

Start from La Cartara, south-west of the village of Burdignes. Park near a cross on the right as you head uphill.

(S) Set off along the gently descending path to the west, on the other side of the road. Follow this well-marked path, which then crosses a stream and curves to the right. Ignore two paths leading uphill to the left and continue straight on until you reach a tarmac section, which you then follow all the way to the left as it climbs.

Pass below a house situated higher up on the left and enter the forest. Follow a flat, straight section, pass a spring on the left and look out for a large paved area of large stone blocks on the left: this is where the path through the forest begins.

(1) Turn left and climb the path used for timber harvesting. It curves to the right then to the left before veering off to the right again and climbing in a straight line to the Burnisson forest track (ignore the cross-country paths).

Once on the track, follow it to the right for 1,250 metres, ignoring two paths on the left in succession: one towards the 1,196m mark, the other shortly after. Pass close to a forest hut on the left and arrive at a junction of two tracks at the 1,189m mark.

(2) Follow the track that heads left, climbing slightly, curves left, then reaches a small valley and turns right at the 1240m mark. The path is flat then descends slightly to reach a junction at the 1242m mark, the site of a timber yard.

(3) Leave the track heading almost straight ahead and take a path climbing steeply to the left, heading due south. Ignore the paths branching off to the left and right and cross a grassy area planted with conifers. This path leads to a main track, which you follow to the left for 1 km.

(4) Leave the track and follow a path branching off at right angles to the right, heading slightly downhill. This path starts almost in a straight line before making a sharp bend to the right. Ignore the cross-country paths and, in the valley at the 1205m mark, leave the path straight ahead to take the one descending to the left in a tight bend.

Arrive at the hamlet of Achis and follow the tarmac section climbing to the left and passing in front of a house’s courtyard.

(5) Take the grassy path behind the houses below on the right. Follow this path uphill to reach the meadow with the Cros du Vernet house on your left.

(6) At the junction, turn left, ignoring the path going straight ahead, and follow the edge of the meadow. At the 1237m mark, opposite the entrance to the house, follow the path to the right then take a hairpin bend to reach the tarmac road. Pass through the hamlet of Blache Pécou and arrive at the crossroads at the Maison dans la Nature.

(7) Follow the partly tarmac-surfaced path to the left for about 150 metres, then take a descending path on the right that crosses meadows. You will reach a forest track at an elevation of 1178 metres; follow it to the right until you exit the forest.

Then take the path on the left marked in white and brown. This path crosses the forest, curves to the left then right, skirting an area of springs on the right, and leads back to the starting point.

There are two sections where you need to study the map carefully; the rest is fine

There were two of us, with a map and the route saved on a mobile phone. The directions are a bit off compared to the description... for the first three waypoints, we had to improvise quite a bit. After that, everything went smoothly. A lovely walk

A lovely walk through the Burdignes cross-country skiing area. The route runs almost entirely through woodland, making it ideal on hot days.
There’s a bit of elevation gain, but apart from one or two fairly steep climbs, the route flows nicely.
Didn’t see a soul along the 15–16 km route, which was lovely!

Hello,
I’d give this route an average rating for its appeal, as the walk takes place mainly in woodland and so offers no views. Otherwise, it’s a nice walk, passing by a cheese shop where the products are well worth a stop.
Kind regards

Thank you for your feedback on this hike. Where exactly would you have liked more detail, and now that you’ve been there, what should be added to the description so that future hikers don’t get lost?
Kind regards

Hello,
As we didn’t have a satnav, the directions weren’t very clear. Luckily, we had the very accurate IGN 1:25,000 map, which helped us avoid getting lost. But you still need to know how to read a map, don’t you?
The route is really lovely, with beautiful hills and breathtaking scenery. Despite the lack of rain, we still found some mushrooms (milk caps) and a few porcini. The route is quite shaded and can be very muddy. We’ll do it again, and thank you for this lovely walk.
