Towards the heights of Saint Sauveur-en-Rue to the west of Bourg-Argental

A hike west of Bourg-Argental, towards Saint-Sauveur-en-Rue, between the Déôme and Riotet valleys. Beautiful views at Ss Montchal and the Taillard Forest, to the east towards the Alps and to the north towards the Col de la République. A route alternating between very quiet roads and good paths and trails.

Description of the walk

Access to Bourg-Argental in the south of the Loire department on the D1082 road linking Saint-Étienne to Annonay.

Parking is available in the town centre on Place des Noyers, near the cinema and Espace Jacques Estérel.

(S/E) From the car park near the Espace Jacques Estérel, head towards the town centre to the south, going as far as the end of Boulevard Henri Sénéclauze.

(1) Cross Rue de la République to take Rue des Fossés and pass the tourist office on your left. Then turn right onto Rue Du Puy and continue for 400 metres.

(2) At the industrial estate, turn right onto Allée du Pont Rouillard. Ignore the path on the right and cross the Argental via the bridge. Continue for approximately 150 metres until you reach a crossroads.

(3) Leave the road and follow the path uphill opposite. On the ridge, you will reach a road coming from the left. Follow it to the right until you reach the hamlet of Montchovet.

(4) Cross the hamlet via the path going uphill. 50 metres after the last house, take the hairpin bend to the right, which winds its way between the houses on either side. Follow this grassy path to the next crossroads.

(5) Turn onto the path going uphill to the left. Ignore a path branching off to the left in a bend in the path to the right. You will reach a road; follow it to the left for 500 metres.

(6) At the crossroads, ignore the road going straight ahead and turn right at a right angle. Follow this tarmac road to a place called Les Boisdelles.

(7) Near a cross on the right, do not head towards the house but continue to the right towards the forest. Cross the forest via the path that curves to the right, then further to the left before exiting the forest near the Lapras farm (located nearby on the left). Reach a road and follow it to the right for 450 metres before arriving at a left-hand bend near a cross that is not very visible, located in the fir trees on the left.

(8) Leave the road and take the path, which is not very visible at first, descending to the right. The path curves to the right before reaching a road. Cross the road and head opposite towards the hamlet of Chazeau.

(9) Cross the hamlet via the road and, 300 m further on, leave the road and take a path descending to the right. You will reach a new road near a place called l'Adroit de la Roche on the right.

(10) Follow the road to the left and, 250 m further on, at a new crossroads, take the road downhill to the left. This road clearly leads to Fogère after passing four houses located higher up on the left.

(11) After the last house on the left, take the road at a right angle to the right. Walk past a house on the right, then walk past the farm on the right, ignoring a path leading off to the left nearby. After the farm, continue downhill along the first path opposite. 600 m after the farm, the path curves to the right and, 100 m further on, reaches a crossroads. Ignore the path opposite and take the hairpin bend to the left. Pass close to a house below on the right, then, after crossing the stream, walk alongside a house on the left. You will reach the D1082.

(12) Carefully cross the road and continue straight ahead on the D29. After 300 metres, leave the road and take the path on the right running alongside the road to reach the hamlet of Les Bernes.

(13) Facing the houses in the hamlet, head downhill to the right, then follow the grassy path around the bend to the right. Ignore any paths branching off to the left to reach the Croix de la Pause.

(14) Ignore a path on the left and continue straight downhill along the main path, which then becomes a road. Ignore a path on the left towards Le Martinet. Ignore two paths uphill on the right. Ignore another road on the left towards Le Mas.

(15) Near the town, reach the D2 coming from the left and continue straight ahead towards the town. After 200 m, you will find the Espace Jacques Estérel (S/E).

Notes

Bring the usual hiking gear.

Worth a visit

Take a tour of the town of Bourg-Argental with its beautiful buildings at the tourist office or the church. Pleasant town centre with shaded terraces and shops selling everything you need.

On the route, La Croix de la Pause de 1775, where coffin bearers coming from Les Bernes or Thélis and heading to Bourg-Argental used to stop and recite prayers.

Nice little hike, impeccable description, did it on 6 October with acceptable temperatures, a good climb, half the route, and a good descent the other half, accessible to people in their sixties
