Park at the side of the D25 at L'Anquerne. There is enough space set back from the road for safe parking.
(S/E) Head south with your back to the road.
(1) At the first fork, continue straight ahead on the forest road, which leads into a small valley. In winter, this is a cross-country ski trail. The route takes you through valleys and forests to the fork below Les Loges, where the path joins a variant of the GTJ (Grande Traversée du Jura).
(2) Turn right and continue straight ahead through the valley to Malatrait. There is a short climb before descending to Le Berbois, still in the valley.
(3) In Le Berbois, there is a lodge with a yurt and two teepees. Join a small road coming from La Pesse, which leads to La Borne au Lion. Turn left.
There are two options: follow the road to Borne au Lion, which is a short distance away, or after about 200 metres, take a path on the right and 100 metres further on, turn left to climb into the woods and reach Borne au Lion. This second route, which follows the trail, is of course more enjoyable. In winter, the road from La Pesse is not cleared of snow and is converted into a cross-country ski trail.
(4) Arrive at the Borne au Lion, which is located after a large car park. Several tables and a shelter allow you to picnic depending on the time of day. However, as this is a very popular spot, it is preferable to save your meal break for the Crêt du Nerbier.
The return journey is by road to Berbois.
(3) Continue along the road after the hamlet, taking the hairpin bend to the left, and continue for about 200 metres. A small path climbs up to the right. Take this path and continue through the woods. You will rejoin the road a little further on after a descent equipped with log steps.
After a few dozen metres on the road, take the path on the right to reach Crêt du Nerbier.
(5) After a slight climb up the hillside, you will come to a signpost. Turn right onto a small path through the meadow to reach Crêt du Nerbier. The climb offers a beautiful view of the surrounding area, Crêt de Chalam, La Pesse and Croix des Bouchoux. Crêt du Nerbier is the best place to stop for lunch because of the view.
(6) Continue along the path through forests and meadows until you reach a stone dome (well?), pass to the left and follow a small path, leaving the forest path that branches off to the right. Descend into the forest, crossing a few trees that are blocking the path, but nothing insurmountable. Heavy snowfall in winter has caused some damage.
(7) At the three-way junction, turn right: the area can be a little marshy after heavy rain, but if you are careful, it is possible to keep your feet dry without difficulty. Opposite, the path continues; it is blocked by a red plastic ribbon because it leads to a house.
After this wet section, you will come to a short stretch of road. Leave it very quickly, passing in front of a house.
(8) Leave the house on your left and continue straight ahead. The route resumes in the forest on a gentle slope through the grass and then on a forest path.
Continue along this path to reach L'Anquerne. The final stage of the route takes you across meadows to the junction at the start. There are horses and camels or dromedaries here! Do not go too close to the farm because there are dogs. However, we did not encounter any difficulties.
(1) Continue straight ahead to return to the car park on the edge of the D25 (S/E).
