The Urculu circular loop from Croix Thibault

The D428 alone offers wonderful scenery. Unless you make frequent stops, you won't be able to enjoy it much as it's best to keep your eyes on the road. The Urculu offers different scenery along this route as you pass through plateaus with magnificent views of the surrounding area and the Basque and Béarn mountains.

Description of the walk

At Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, take the D428, which is also the route of the Way of St James (GR® 65). This road alone is worth the trip for its exceptional scenery. During the winter season, signs indicating "road closed, not cleared of snow" remain in place permanently. This is rarely the case, so ignore them if the weather permits. Follow the road for 15 km and park at Croix Thibault.

(S/E) Follow the Way of St James (GR®65), which branches off to the right of the road towards the Col de Bentarte. Pass a fountain just before the pass and, a little further on, leave theGR® by turning left to reach the pass.

(1) Take the HRP trail due east to the Col d'Arnostéguy.

(2) Opposite, you can see the path that climbs to the summit of Urculu. The view from the pass is impressive. Either climb straight up and follow the main trail, or halfway up, climb the switchbacks via small paths that are only visible at the last moment. Take the switchbacks on the left, which keep you closer to the main trail. Pass the rocks at the summit and veer left to reach the tower.

(3) From the tower, head north, first zigzagging between the sharp limestone pavement (cracked limestone expanses carved out by water) and then following the grassy ridge. In clear weather, you will quickly see your destination: a reservoir and the start of a track. In foggy weather, there are no markings or paths, so a compass is essential, or even better, GPS tracking on your smartphone. Reach the track.

(4) Follow the track to the Zinahatzu sheepfold or Urculu huts.

(5) Continue along the tarmac track leading to the huts until you reach the D428.

(6) At this point, there are two options.
In foggy weather, take the road on the left and return to the Col d'Arnosteguy and then to your car. This is a 4.7 km stretch of tarmac with no significant elevation gain.
Otherwise, follow the map, cross the road and head west down into the Oilaskoa valley.

Pass through a small sharp limestone pavement at the start, then descend through the grass and find a small brown dirt path to the Oilaskoa stream. Cross it and take a path on the right that climbs gently to the last building of the Cabanes d'Oilaskoa.

(7) Go around the building and join the track above. Turn left and stay on the main track until you reach the D428.

(8) Follow the D428 to the right until you reach the starting point at Croix Thibault (S/E).

Notes

(3) In foggy weather, it is essential to have a compass or GPS, as there are no markings or paths.

(6) In foggy weather, if you are not used to unmarked and untracked hikes, avoid descending via the OilasKoa valley. Danger if you veer too far to the right.

Worth a visit

(7) From the upper track, you can access the Oilaskoa Cave, where 6,000-year-old bear bones have been found.

A very beautiful hike with magnificent weather and splendid views of the mountains of the Basque Country. The first part is on the St Jacques trail, where you may encounter other people, but after that it is really peaceful.
One small downside: when we did the hike, at point 7, there was an electric sheep fence. We had to climb over it with some caution!

Half of the hike is on forest roads, so no problem there. The other half is across fields, and you have to choose your route from among all the sheep tracks. In any case, the scenery is fantastic and, as the starting point is easy to see, there is no risk of getting lost in sunny weather. If there is fog, it is best to avoid this route.

Hello,
The approach is a bit long, but it's already a feast for the eyes, the landscapes are magnificent.
Magnificent scenery. It's definitely better to have a GPS.
We would like to thank the person who allowed us to do this hike and Visorando for introducing it to us.
At number 5, stop by the Urkulu sheepfold, where Jean Bernard the shepherd will give you a friendly welcome. He sells delicious alpine sheep's cheese. Don't be afraid of his dogs, they're friendly.
We had a wonderful day.

Thank you to the bishop for this message. When I tracked this hike with GPS, the return route was not paved, so it was not unpleasant.
I will take this comment into account and plan to go back and redo the hike to record the route described, as it does not appear on the maps after the Larrondo huts.
I will then correct the route and the Topo if necessary.
Best regards, taboulechat

A very beautiful hike, but the end can be modified. Instead of returning to the starting point by climbing back up to the D428 via the carriage road (which is just tarmac), it is more pleasant to turn off towards the LARRONDO huts and climb up to the URDANARE peak, go around it on the right, join the D428 and climb up this for 200 metres to the starting point. This does not change the elevation gain, but it is 1 km shorter, with a steeper slope, and avoids 2.5 km of uninteresting tarmac.

A very beautiful hike in beautiful weather like we had on 27 May 2020. I didn't know this mountain at all, and the effort required to reach it (the final climb is quite steep) is rewarded a hundredfold. A beautiful descent, a little gentler, and I followed the trail to the Oillaskoa huts and came back via the track. Thank you to the author for this superb walk. I will bring other hikers here, and now that I have scouted the route, I will be able to enjoy the landscape even more. In good weather, of course, as there is no point in going in foggy weather.

An interesting variation, it's true, we should favour a variation with beautiful views. But these are Basque mountains, not Béarn mountains. And yes, there's always that friendly rivalry. In any case, Béarn and the Basque Country are part of the same mountain range and have magnificent landscapes, so come and visit us.

I'll let you know as soon as I've done it, at the end of February if all goes well, otherwise this summer, but having already done the Urculu in a different way, it will be in the middle of the cania. The place where you leave the track is clearly marked, and what must be a sheepfold is clearly visible as a landmark for the descent. It should be fine, I'll let you know.
Best regards
Bernard

Hello Bernard
Thank you for your comment and the good ratings. It's clear that the Basque mountains are in the foreground, as Urculu is right in the middle. I live here. From west to east, the view stretches from the 3 couronnes to the Pic d'Orhy. But you can also see the mountains of the Aspe valley, which are currently covered in snow. Pic d'Annie, etc. I will make the correction and add Basque mountains first. However, could you tell me if the explanations from point 6 onwards are sufficient?
Best regards
Jean Claude
