In Reichsfeld, park near the church. The hike is marked by two signs: the first at the start of Reichsfeld is the Blue Cross, which we will find again at the end of the route, and the second is the Red Rectangle.
Blue Cross signposting.
(S/E) The route begins on the tarmac road of Gruckert, which climbs above the church. After crossing the vineyards, you enter the forest. Follow the road to the stele.
(1) Continue past two hairpin bends. At the three-way junction, continue climbing to the right, still following the Blue Cross. Once you reach the ridge, continue to your left until you reach the Gruckert chalet.
Red rectangle markings.
(2) The path passes behind and above the chalet on its right-hand side. Behind the chalet, turn left towards the Col de l'Ungersberg.
(3) At the Col de l'Ungersberg, enjoy the view of the valley in front of you. The path continues behind you, on the left.
After a few bends in the forest, you will arrive at the summit of Ungersberg and the Edouard Héring tower located there.
(4) Admire the view from the top of the tower. In good weather, you can see Strasbourg Cathedral some 40 kilometres away. The path, still marked with red rectangles, descends on the other side of the summit.
Blue Cross markings
(5) Once you reach the water source, continue straight ahead, now following the Blue Cross markings. A sign will point you in the direction of Reichsfeld and indicate a walking time of 40 minutes. This is roughly how long it will take you to return to the village.
Follow the Blue Cross markings to Reichsfeld (S/E).
