Between Blienschwiller and Itterswilller via the Bout du Monde

A hike at mid-altitude amongst the vineyards and peaceful villages of this corner of the Alsatian wine region, away from the major tourist sites. Along the way, several vineyard shrines and numerous picnic tables.

Description of the walk

Start at No. 62 on the Wine Route, just below the Place de la Fontaine. No car park, but you can park along the street that runs through the village. Please note: parking is not guaranteed; if the village is busy or there are festivities, you may need to look for a space further away from the starting point. There is no car park in the village.

(S/E) From the fountain, heading down the Route des Vins, take thefirst alley on the left (schloupf) after a vaulted passage and follow a wall that climbs towards the vineyards. At the end of the alley, turn right. At a small clearing, turn left. Ignore a path branching off to the right and continue northwards between the vineyards. When you reach a vineyard track, follow it to the left.

(1) At the wayside shrine, turn right. At the three-way junction, veer right and continue northwards. Enter the village of Nothalten, come out onto the D35 and follow it to the left.

(2) Pass the church in Nothalten on your left and continue along the D35. When the road bends right in Zell (fountain), leave it and continue straight on into Rue du Tilleul. At the first junction, turn left then immediately right. Continue north-north-east through the vineyards, ignoring all side roads. After the vineyards, cross a small wood. On emerging from it, first turn right then left to climb towards Itterswiller. Ignore a road on the right and rejoin the wine route (D35; church on the right).

(3) Climb a few stone steps ahead and continue along a path that winds up between the houses to reach a signpost. Head back down the same path to the D35.

(3) Follow the road to the right for about 100 metres. At the corner by the cemetery, leave the road and take a path on the left. After about 400 m, rejoin the D253. Cross the road and follow a path on the left that runs parallel to it.

(4) At a junction, where the D35 turns left, turn right onto the path and head up into the forest. Further on, continue along a track through the vineyards (note Baumgarten Abbey below on the left). Ignore a path coming from the left and turn sharply right. At a fork, turn left to reach Bernardvillé (nicknamed Le Bout du Monde). At the T-junction, turn left and you will soon reach the church.

(5) Then take the main street, head downhill and pass the town hall. Shortly afterwards, take thefirst right, the Chemin du Talweg. At the fork that appears immediately, turn left. Walk past the cemetery, ignoring afirst turn-off to the right and then asecond to the left.

(6) At another fork, continue left. Pass the Oratoire Saint-Michel and then wind your way through the vineyards. Ignore a path leading down to the left and continue westwards. At the next junction, turn left to reach the cemetery and the church in Reichsfeld (which is also considered a village at the end of the world).

(7) Turn left into Place de l’Église, then right into Rue Mathias Ringmann, and walk past the town hall. Ignore all the turnings on the right and turn left with the street. At the next junction, turn left, then left again, still on Rue Mathias Ringmann. Continue straight on until you reach a fork with a telephone pole.

(8) Then turn right onto Rue Brunnen. Leave the village via a path heading east-southeast. Do not take either of the two paths on your left, but keep to the right until you reach a wayside shrine. Pass the shrine and this time stay on the left-hand path which descends to a junction with several paths.

(9) Then take the path leading down to the right, immediately ignore a fork on the left and go round a building on the right. Cross a stream, turn immediately left, ignore the forks on the right and follow the stream on your left. After a sharp right-hand bend, you’ll reach the hamlet of Taubental. On leaving the hamlet, ignore a path on the right and cross a stream.

(10) Turn immediately left at a sharp angle. Follow a path below for about 1 km.

(11) At the junction, follow the path on the right. Ignore the paths branching off first to the left and then to the right and continue down to the D253. Cross the road and continue straight ahead along a small road. When this turns right (elevation 292), follow a path on the left. You will soon rejoin the road and immediately reach the hamlet of Boemstein.

(12) Walk straight through the hamlet. At the next fork, follow a small road to the right. Pass a wayside cross on the right-hand side and arrive at a crossroads (elevation 274).

(13) Then turn left and right, leaving the water tower on your left. Follow a path straight ahead, ignoring a first turn-off to the right, then a second to the left. About a hundred metres further on, at another junction, turn sharply left. At the crossroads about a hundred metres further on, take a path on the right that descends between the vineyards.

(14) At the wayside shrine, turn right onto a wide path that climbs slightly. Follow the main path, ignoring four turn-offs to the right. Then head south-south-west and walk through the vineyards. You will come to an orientation table.

(15) Take thesecond path on the left (south-east) and head downhill. Ignore a turn-off on the right, enter the village and come out onto the Route des Vins (D203). Follow this road to the left back to the starting point (S/E).

The description and route are accurate. I didn’t have any problems. However, there’s far too much tarmac – although it makes sense that there would be some, but in this case…
I wouldn’t recommend doing this route when the sun is beating down and the temperature is soaring, as the whole walk is in the open. (Logical again, but worth pointing out all the same)
I didn’t come across anyone apart from the villagers.
I think I went round the village where we’re supposed to start three or four times, as described: it’s tricky to find a place to park.
I wouldn’t recommend the whole route. Some sections were interesting, but I don’t think it’s worth it.

A lovely walk, mainly through the vineyards of this quiet corner of Alsace. There’s a stunning view of the Alsace plain, and from Itterswiller you can even see the snow-capped Alps. We didn’t come across many people on the route.

Thank you for your help. I’ve sent a message to the owner, whom I’ve met before. If she confirms that the path is blocked, I’ll adjust my route.
See you soon on other routes.
Have some lovely walks.

Hello
At a place called Taubenthal, the path is blocked by a closed park and there is no way through.
We have to turn back and take a parallel path further up, which is less pleasant.
What’s more, in the end it’s longer and has more elevation gain than indicated.
Otherwise, a superb hike
Thanks anyway for sharing.

Good evening,

I’m sorry you had to take a detour.
Could you please tell me where you had to take the detour, so that I can improve the description?
Thank you

Distance and elevation gain do not match
Route ends on private property that cannot be crossed, requiring a 2 km detour

A lovely walk in open countryside, through vineyards and a bit of woodland, with superb views of the Vosges, the surrounding villages and, in good weather, the Black Forest and Strasbourg Cathedral. The route passes through several traditional villages, offers opportunities for a picnic, and includes a detour to Baumgarten Abbey. There isn’t much of an elevation gain, which is perfect! Thanks to Denis

Hello, we went for a walk in glorious sunshine, with magnificent autumn colours and lovely little villages typical of Alsace. There was a bit of tarmac, but that was to be expected, and most of the route is still on dirt tracks through the vineyards. We parked at the edge of the village, near the Erasme Chapel. There’s a bit of space to park on either side of the road; otherwise, yes, it’s tricky in the village. The 14 km was a bit short for us, so we extended it by doing a circular route from Bernardvillé via the Ungersberg, though thankfully without climbing to the summit, as we ended up doing 22 km, which isn’t bad. Definitely worth doing in autumn for the colours. In summer, the sun must beat down quite a bit, as the walk is exposed almost all the way.
Lovely day, thank you
