Description of the walk

In the village of Dieffenthal, park in the car park on Rue des Châteaux, near the church.

Markings: Red rectangle with white stripe

(S/E) Walk up Rue des Châteaux, turn right following the markings and cross the medieval garden. After a few minutes, you will reach the Rocher des Celtes, a magical place. Enjoy the view over the plain and the vineyards.

(1) At the crossroads, turn right and continue along this path. After a few hundred metres, turn left at the T-junction.

(2) At the next junction, turn left again, still following the initial markings. Walk for about 1.5 km. Shortly before reaching the GR®5, turn right.

(3) At the crossroads with the main forest road, turn left and join the GR®5 by taking the upper path. Walk for more than 2 km on the very wide path. This will take you around the Rittersberg massif.

(4) At the crossroads (picnic tables and horse riding stop at the edge of the clearing), continue straight ahead.

No markings

(5) At the intersection, take the unmarked path on the left, which leads to a promontory from which you can see the ruins of Ramstein below the massif (important reminder: these ruins are currently closed to the public) and, more importantly, discover the imposing Ortenbourg Castle, with its fortified keep. Retrace your steps.

(5) Continue along the GR®5 (south). Descend towards the castle moat.

Blue cross markings

At the T-junction, turn left and you will soon reach an intersection.

No markings

(6) Turn right to enter the Ortenbourg ruins, discover its unique architecture up close and enjoy the unique landscape. Retrace your steps.

Blue Cross markings

(6) Back at the intersection, follow the marked trail to the right and descend. Ignore a path coming from the right.

(7) At the intersection, turn right onto the small path, following the same markings. Gradually descend to return to the vineyard. Several benches allow you to take a break while enjoying the view. Come out onto a small road and follow it as it continues.

Yellow Cross markings

(8) At the Taennelkreuz crossroads, turn left, pass in front of the chapel and follow a very wide path. At a fork, keep to the right and pass in front of a riding centre. Continue straight ahead on the marked path, ignoring all the side paths. Walk along the cemetery and, at the foot of the church, turn left to return to the car park (S/E).

Perfect route on a gorgeous spring morning, visiting the castle and a few points of interest along the way.
Some of the descriptions did not quite match the signage, unless we missed something, but it was a little confusing at the beginning and at the end. All very clear in between though.

This is a fairly strenuous hike, which I recommend avoiding in hot or rainy weather. The trail is rocky.
Other than that, it was a very enjoyable hike.

A beautiful hike, don't hesitate to make the round trip to the "rocher de l'indien" (nice), be careful on the descent to see Ramstein Castle

After the Celtic rock, the path is very overgrown with brambles and tall grass for around 200m.
Beautiful views over the circuit.

A superb ride with magnificent scenery
A few nice climbs, including the first rather tough km, but it was a real pleasure the whole way!

A lovely, shady walk under the trees, with a steady climb up to the imposing Château de l'Ortenbourg. In fine weather, there's a magnificent view over the Alsace plain to the Black Forest.
On the way back to Dieffenthal, there's a good path through the vineyards, but all in the sunshine!
