Long circular loop around eastern Bordeaux through green spaces

La Bastide is a neighbourhood located on the right bank of the Garonne, east of Bordeaux. This long-neglected working-class neighbourhood is undergoing rapid change, with the conversion of industrial wastelands, multiple real estate projects, new streets... The proposed route is likely to change quickly...
The aim of this walk is to connect all the green spaces larger than one hectare in this neighbourhood, avoiding traffic as much as possible and offering the most beautiful views of Bordeaux from the quays. Two shortcuts are suggested to shorten the walk.
I suggest starting the walk on the left bank quays, but it is also possible to start directly from the right bank, at Place Stalingrad, at the end of the Pont de Pierre bridge. The walk can also be done by bicycle, taking care to watch out for pedestrians.

Description of the walk

Parvis de La Maison Écocitoyenne - Quai Richelieu (bike parking, tram Porte de Bourgogne (A, C, D).

(S/E) With your back to the water mirror, follow the quays towards the Pont de Pierre bridge via the Promenade Martin Luther King. Walk along the quays to the Pont de Pierre bridge.

(1) Cross the bridge (magnificent view) and, at the end, discover the superb Place Stalingrad.

(2) A large, beautiful tree-lined square featuring a magnificent blue lion (by Xavier Veilhan), a traditional meeting place. Follow the quays on the left, Promenade Michel Courajoud (5 ha - permanent - toilets).

(3) The Promenade Courajoud is a circular route connecting the Pont de Pierre and the Pont Chaband-Delmas bridges on either side of the Garonne. On the right is a square called Place des Droits de l'Enfant (Children's Rights Square). (1,800 m² - open every day from 8.30am to 6pm or later). At low tide, you can see shipwrecks dating back to the Second World War.
Continue along the quays until you reach the Puits: a green building by artist Suzanne Treister (worth a visit). Turn right, cross the Quai des Queyries, walk a few metres to the right and enter the botanical garden through a pretty metal gate (7 hectares - open daily from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. or later).
Quai de Queyries, 100 m to the left, you can visit "Darwin", one of the oldest third places in France.

(4) Set off on an adventure in the garden (lake, several thousand plants, eleven reconstructed natural landscapes of Aquitaine, greenhouses, exhibitions, activities, etc.).
At the end of your exploration, exit in the middle of the garden on the north side, Rue Raymond Lavigne.

(5) Continue along the tree-lined Allées Suzanne Martin, then turn right onto Rue Reignier and enjoy the very pleasant Square Reignier, which is home to a micro-forest (0.5 ha - permanent). Then take the first left onto Rue Adolphe Chales, then the first right onto Rue Hortense until you reach No. 84. Turn left into the passageway next to the school, cross the small Françoise Dolto square and follow the path that leads to Rue de la Rotonde.
This passage is very urban, but the neighbourhood is undergoing redevelopment, so it will no doubt soon be possible to offer a slightly more pleasant and green route.

(6) Turn left onto Rue de la Rotonde and continue for about 300 metres. As you pass, admire the splendid Bordeaux Métropole archives building and its wisteria on your left.
Go under the Pont Bouthier bridge and immediately afterwards take the metal spiral staircase on your left to cross the Pont Bouthier bridge. Go down the metal staircase on the left or continue along the ramp, then turn left onto the wide Avenue Thiers and cross the road using the first pedestrian crossing. Slightly to your left, take Rue Baudrimont, then turn right after 20 metres onto Rue Jules Simon.

(7) Take the path on the left to cross Square du Petit Cardinal (theoretically 2.7 ha - permanent).
Turn right onto Rue Poincaré and walk for 50 metres.

(8) Enter Parc Pinçon (2.7 ha - permanent - toilets and water point) on the right through a metal gate that allows bicycles and pedestrians to pass through. This is a pretty park in the middle of an exemplary working-class neighbourhood from the early 1950s, which was visited by Nikita Khrushchev.
Follow the path on your left. Leave the park and turn right onto Rue Ferdinand Palau, then left onto Rue Édouard Branly. At the end of the street, turn right onto Rue de la Bénauge (shaded alley) and cross the small Pierre Bernadas square (toilets) to reach a roundabout.

(9) Take thesecond right, Rue Bonnefin. At the end of the street, cross diagonally across Place Calixte Camelle, a tree-lined but underrated square (0.4 ha - permanent - toilets) and continue along Cours Le Rouzic. Take thesecond left, Rue Paul Camelle (perhaps the prettiest tree-lined street in Bordeaux) and follow the first left, Rue de Nuits. Pass in front of the magnificent Maison Cantonale, which serves as a branch of the town hall.

(10) A first shortcut is possible if you do not wish to discover the new face of the Bastide district (see the practical information section).
Continue along Rue de Nuits, then cross Rue de la Bénauge and follow Rue de Cénac. On the left is the pretty Simone Brandy square. At the end of the street, on the right, cross the Suzanne Lenglen area (wooden walkway) then turn right, walking alongside the sports grounds, and turn right onto Rue René Buthaut until you reach the roundabout.

(11) Turn left onto Rue Henri Dunant, then take the first right onto Rue du Général du Cheyron. Cross Rue de la Bénauge, then take the narrow Passage Durand opposite and continue right onto Rue Montméjean. At the end of the street, you will see the interesting building of the Bastide nursery (1908).
Turn left onto Rue Chabrely (opposite the charming Montaut square) and continue to the end, then cross Avenue Thiers at the pretty Sainte-Marie de la Bastide church. Walk past the church and turn left onto Rue Abadie (lined with trees), then cross diagonally across the Jardin Abadie and turn left onto Allées Serr (lined with trees). Turn left onto Rue Honoré Picon. At the end of the street, you will find yourself back at Place Stalingrad.

(12) A second shortcut is possible if you do not wish to explore other green spaces (see the "Practical Information" section).
- Cross Place Stalingrad and head towards Pont de Pierre.

(2) Walk along Quai Deschamps on your left. After 100 metres, turn right into Parc des Angéliques. (4 hectares - open all year round). Long, narrow park (lots of wild camping!).

(13) You can walk along the Garonne, but I recommend following the magnificent wisteria-covered alley for nearly 800 metres. At the end of the park, take the metal staircase to Pont Saint-Jean.

(14) Cross the bridge (unfortunately a road bridge, but with a pretty view). At the other end, walk along the quays on the right. On your left is the Parc des Sports Saint-Michel (5.5 hectares - permanent).

(15) Lots of sporting activities. Walk along the quays, passing under the Pont de Pierre bridge.

(1) Continue straight ahead until you reach the Maison Écocitoyenne (S/E).

Notes

The first shortcut is to start from the Maison Cantonale (10) and turn right onto Rue de Châteauneuf. Continue along Rue de l'École, then turn right onto Rue de Chabrely (opposite the charming Square Montaut) and follow the route as indicated.

The second shortcut involves crossing the Pont de Pierre bridge (2) again, then following the quays on the right and finishing the circular route in front of the Maison Écocitoyenne (S/E).

An urban hike that takes us through unexpected and remarkable places, notably the botanical garden, which alone makes this walk well worth the effort. We started at point 7 and extended the hike beyond the Saint Jean bridge to reach the newly inaugurated Simone Veil bridge. The return trip on the left bank proved to be uninteresting for 1,500 metres because it was undeveloped and we were too close to the cars: narrow pavement, rubbish, construction work... Many buildings and new neighbourhoods are booming. At the junction of the Saint Jean bridge, we resumed the route. Beautiful panoramic views, then back to the right bank with sights on the Garonne: wrecks emerging at low tide... Then the famous botanical garden and a few mazes in booming neighbourhoods mixing the old and the new with very modern architecture dividing what remains of industrial wastelands. Add an extra 3 kilometres with this version.
