Go to Porte de Bourgogne, in front of the Pont de Pierre. The Porte de Bourgogne tram station is the hub of the Bordeaux network at the entrance to the Pont de Pierre (Bordeaux'sfirst bridge over the Garonne in 1822).
(S/E) Cross the bridge (magnificent view) and discover Place Stalingrad, which is becoming increasingly wooded.
(1) Pass between the legs of the unmissable Blue Lion (a work by Xavier Veilhan), a traditional meeting place. Cross the square diagonally and take Rue Honoré Picon, then turn right onto the tree-lined Allées de Serr and walk for almost 200 metres. Turn left onto Allée Jean Giono and walk for about 100 metres before turning right onto Esplanade Linné (Cité Botanique building, refreshment bar) and entering the Botanical Garden through a pretty gate.
(2) Walk along the right-hand side of the Botanical Garden and take the exit in the middle of the garden, which runs alongside a building. Turn right onto Rue Raymond Lavigne and walk 20 metres before turning left onto Allée Suzanne Martin. Turn right onto Rue Reignier (adorable little Square Reignier) before quickly turning left onto Rue Adolphe Charles and then right onto Rue Hortense. Turn left at No. 84 and follow the passageway next to the school, cross the small Square Françoise Dolto and follow the brand new route that passes between the buildings and takes the new Rue de la Reine des Roses then Cour Edmée Chandon before coming out onto Rue de la Rotonde. Turn left and walk 300 metres , admiring the splendid renovated Bordeaux Métropole archives building and its imposing wisteria.
(3) Pass under the Pont Bouthier bridge and immediately turn left up the metal spiral staircase and cross the bridge. Descend the metal staircase on the left or continue along the ramp, then turn left onto the large Avenue Thiers (heavy traffic). Follow thefirst pedestrian crossing and take Rue Baudrimont opposite before turning right onto Rue Jules Simon (traffic) for 20 metres. Take the path on the left which crosses Square du Petit Cardinal (theoretically 2.7 hectares - permanent). Walk alongside the school before turning right into Rue Poincaré for 50 metres. Enter Parc Pinçon on the right through a metal gate which allows bicycles and pedestrians to pass through.
(4) Follow the path on the left to exit the park and continue straight ahead on Rue Jean Goussebaire (lined with trees) before turning right onto Rue de la Bénauge, following the tree-lined paths and the car park for 200 metres. Cross the small Square Bernada and take Rue Bonnefin (2nd street on the right at the roundabout). After 200 metres, cross Place Calixte Camelle, lined with trees and currently undergoing construction, and continue on Cours le Rouzic. Take the second left onto Rue Paul Camelle (perhaps the prettiest tree-lined street in Bordeaux) before turning left at the first street, Rue de Nuits.
(5) Follow Rue de Nuits to the end, passing in front of the magnificent Maison Cantonale, which serves as a town hall annex. Turn right for 20 metres before crossing Rue de la Bénauge (very busy) to enter Rue de Cénac for about 200 metres and discover the new face of La Bastide. Turn slightly right to cross Espace Suzanne Lenglen (wooden walkway), then turn left for a few metres and walk along the right-hand side of the buildings bordering the green spaces of this new neighbourhood.
(6) Continue slightly to the left on Rue des Traversiers, then turn left onto the esplanade after 150 metres and reach the quays by going down the large staircase. Walk along the right-hand side of Parc aux Angéliques and its magnificent wisteria-shaded path.
(7) Continue to the Pont de Pierre bridge, cross it to return to the Porte de Bourgogne (S/E).
