The medieval walls from Ville-es-Nonais

Did the Vikings settle in the Rance valley at the foot of Mont Garot? Nothing is less certain, but in any case, this is a theory put forward by the guides. From La Ville-es-Nonais, along the right bank of the Rance, make your way to the site of the supposed Viking camp. At low tide, you can see the site, covered in short vegetation.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park at the Ville-es-Nonais cemetery.

(S/E) Head towards the Rance via Rue Vigneux, and after 300 m, at the corner where a statue of the Virgin Mary stands, turn onto the path on the right, which leads to the site of the Viking camp.

(1) Leave the path and turn right onto the road leading through the hamlet of La Baguais, with its well and the farm characterised by its curved enclosure. Continue straight ahead in the same direction along the road (Rue des Masses) until you reach the junction with the D366.

(2) Take this road to the left , taking care. At the bend in the road, turn right into the lane running alongside a housing estate. This leads to the hamlet of Doslet.

(3) Before the D29, turn right and, after 10 m, turn right into Rue Claire Eau. Follow it to the junction with the main road, Rue Jacques Cartier (D366).

(4) After following it for 10 metres to the left, turn left into Rue de Dessous le Mur, until it meets Rue du Guesclin.

(5) Follow it to the right and you will reach the main road. Cross it carefully and head towards Sainte-Anne Church and its garden.

(6) Walk around the garden to take the path behind the church which descends into a small valley, then climbs back up to the left towards the town hall. Follow the D366 to the right and you will find the cemetery car park on the right (S/E).

Worth a visit

You can extend the walk: shortly after setting off, at the statue of the Virgin Mary, continue straight on to join the path along the banks of the Rance, which joins the original route on the right at a place called Les Perrières: there are two steep flights of steps on this section.
