Tour of the banks of the Rance via the Saint-Hubert and Pont du Châtelier bridges

A lovely day’s hike, taking you around the Rance Maritime as far as the Chatelier lock, the boundary between the Rance Fluviale and the Rance Maritime. On the itinerary: exploring the flora and fauna along the banks of the Rance, magnificent views, small coves and anchorages, and lush valley floors. Depending on the tide, you’ll alternate between shallow waters and mudflats. Please note: some sections along the banks of the Rance are only accessible at low tide and can be quite slippery.

Description of the walk

Possible starting points from several locations, as the circular route circles the Rance.
For this circular loop, the car park at Plage de la Ville Ger has been chosen.

(S/E) Head east along the road, leaving the beach behind. Continue along this road to reach the hamlet of Villes Morvues, then La Gravelle. Atthe first bend after a spring catchment, go straight on where there is a right of way through a courtyard.
Follow the path to Pont de Cieux.

(1) Take the path on the left that runs alongside the Rance and continue to the village of Les Bas Champs.

(2) Walk along the foreshore to the northern exit of the hamlet. Depending on the tide, you can walk along the mudflats or take the path higher up at high tide. Follow the coastal path below the fields, walking along the foreshore; the path sometimes disappears but reappears to cross a track below the hamlet of Cains. Cross a wooden bridge to cross the valley floor; at high tide, the water may partially cover certain sections of the path. Arrive at the hamlet of La Chapelle Saint-Magloire, a very pretty hamlet, with views over the foreshore.

(3) On leaving the hamlet, turn left to return to the coastal path and reach Port Saint-Jean.

(4) Head back up into the village to reach Port Saint-Hubert, following theGRP® Tour du Pays Malouin route, to arrive at the end of the bridge.

(5) Caution here: do not take the steps immediately to the left, as this may be a dead end if the tide is high. Continue for about a hundred metres and turn left at a place called La Pommerais. Note: from the bridge, follow the GRE5, which linkstheGR®34 and GR®37. Reach the slipway at Plouë-sur-Rance.

(6) Cross the marina, turn left, pass the boat winter storage area and rejoin the coastal path. Notes: possible variations depending on the route of the GRE5. Reach the hamlet of Plumazon before crossing the private woodland of Château du Chêne Vert. Along the banks of the Rance, reach the Chêne Vert viewpoint.

(7) Continue along the left bank of the Rance to reach the Cale de la Moinerie.

(8) Carry on past the Saint-Lunaire spring to reach the slipway and water point. Please note: do not cross the Rance, but head up the hill and turn left; be careful as the stairs are steep on the way down.
After walking alongside the Rance and passing the Lessart railway bridge, head to the Chatelier lock.

(9) Cross the Rance to reach its right bank. Turn left onto the yellow-marked path. Head towards the Lessard Bridge and continue on to the Moulin du Prat.

(10) Go round the cove then leave the banks of the Rance by turning right. Head for the exit of the village of La Chapelle de Mordreuc.

(11) Here you have two options:
- turn left onto the path and follow the Rance, then turn left onto the path leading to the Mordreuc slipway,
- stay straight ahead on the path (this is the route shown on the map) to reach the Mordreuc slipway directly.

(12) Turn right towards the village centre, then take the path running along the banks of the Rance just past the old tide mill. Please note: from this point onwards, the path is regularly flooded by a few centimetres of water at high tide but remains passable.

Cross the footbridge at the bottom of the valley and follow the opposite bank towards Ville Ger Beach. When you reach a road on the right, continue along the Rance, turning left onto the upper path marked ‘High Tide’. After this long circular route, you will return to the car park at Ville Ger Beach (S/E).

A magnificent hike!
Taken on 1 November 2025. We were very lucky with the weather! We were five women in their fifties who weren't very athletic.
While it is well marked on the GR34 and GR37, it is very poorly marked or not marked at all on the Pleudihen-sur-Rance side.
You need a bit of experience to stay on track.
We took a different route, starting from the port of St Hubert (5) to the Chatelier lock bridge (9) and then continuing on to spend the night in Dinan.
We returned the next day, retracing our steps from point 9.
And that's where the route signage is lacking!
We made it there and were delighted to have done so.
A big thank you to the locals who guided us.

Beautiful hike.
Minimum 6 hours of walking. Beautiful, varied views. Some sections are not particularly easy.
Very few hikers on this trail, even though it was 18 July.

A lovely walk with varied scenery, and the Rance river in view for most of the way.
In my opinion, this is best suited to experienced and fit walkers
- it isn’t always possible to follow the route, so you have to go through fields and woods to avoid making the walk too long
- in the end, I covered over 28km with 580m of elevation gain; it took me 7½ hours (6½ hours walking and 1 hour’s break)
- I recommend walking poles; the steps are tiring. And at this time of year there is a lot of mud (especially with the rain over the last few weeks)
- Make sure you bring water and snacks, given the length of the walk

I only did a short section of the route, from the Châtelier lock to the Moulin de Rochefort. I can confirm that this section is “difficult”. Following the route on the map isn’t easy (thank goodness for GPS).
