Description of the walk

Start from the Chalou-Moulineux cemetery, Rue des Vignes. Parking is available in the small car park next to the cemetery along the street (see other options in the practical information section).

No signposts

(S/E) Follow Rue des Vignes away from the village and walk along the cemetery on your left. The tarmac soon gives way to a farm track and, after a shed on the right, to a grassy path. After a metal gate, walk downhill along a fence on your right. After passing between two hedges, you will reach a T-junction.

Red and yellow markings

Then follow the path on the left (this is theGRP® du Hurepoix) and climb slightly.

(1) At the top of the hill, turn right at an acute angle onto a farm track. After a few metres (no signpost here), at the corner of an EDF electricity substation, continue straight ahead (east-northeast) on a grassy path (let the track turn left). Note the bell tower of Moulineux church emerging above the trees on your right. Follow a hedge on your right, then pass a beautiful isolated walnut tree on your left. Further on, descend between two hedges, then into a wood, and you will come out onto the D160 road.

(2) Take the road on the left (north-west; ignore the Chemin d'Ézeaux on the right). Follow the road for about 900 m.

No signposts

(3) At the corner of a large farm building on the right, continue straight ahead on the road (leave theGRP® trail on your left) and pass the Chaleau-Saint-Mars exit sign on your left.

(4) At the corner of No. 37, at the foot of the "Beaumont" bus stop, turn right onto a grassy path (be careful to spot this discreet start). Weave your way between hedges and garden fences, then cross a stream on a footbridge (there is a wash house in poor condition on the left). Then turn left onto a wide grassy bench and follow the Chalouette river on your right. Ignore the first bridge and cross the river on the second one. Follow a large farm on your left and you will come to a crossroads.

Red and white markings

(5) Turn right at an acute angle, follow a property wall on your left and follow theGR®111. After the last house, the tarmac gives way to a grassy path that enters a wood. Walk through the undergrowth on flat ground for about 1.5 km until you reach a small tarmac road.

(6) Follow the road to the left and walk along a wall on your right. At a fork, take the right-hand path. After a few metres, just before the gate of a house, turn right onto a footpath. Turn left, leave a tennis court on your right and go around the house and its garden on the right. Continue along a narrow path and follow the Chalouette on your right. After a fence on the right, you will come to a wider path. Follow it to the right (houses).

Red and yellow markings

(7) At the crossroads, turn right and take the path between the pond and the street (beautiful view). After the pond, continue for a few dozen metres along Rue de la Chaussée de l'Étang to enjoy a variety of views of the bell tower of Moulineux church and the buildings surrounding it.

(8) Retrace your steps and walk along the pond again.

Red and white + red and yellow markings

(7) Back at the crossroads, turn right. At the end of the tarmac road, at the corner of a wall, turn right again (no signpost here) and walk along the horse paddocks on your left. Go through a forest gate and take the path closed to motorised vehicles that enters the woods. Still in the undergrowth, the path gives way to a trail that winds between some rocks on the left and a few marshy areas on the right. Go through a forest gate and you will reach the Source Sainte-Appoline (wash house, statue).

No signposts

(9) Turn right at the corner of the statue (leave theGR® andGRP® trails straight ahead) and take the wide grassy path that starts at the foot of a beautiful weeping willow. Climb between the gate of a property on your right and large buildings on your left. At an old gate, cross a tarmac lane (Voie des Hospitaliers) and continue climbing the wide path. At the top of the hill, continue on the tarmac road, then turn right to reach the front of the church.

(10) Climb the steps on the right and go around the church on the right to see its bell tower and chevet. Retrace your steps (it is not possible to go around the church).

(10) With your back to the church entrance, continue to the right and go up Rue des Templiers. Cross Place du Jeu de Paume. At Place Saint-Aignan, take the street on the right and leave the war memorial on your left. At the stop sign, first turn left then right onto Rue des Trembles and walk alongside the school on your left. When you reach the football stadium, turn right, cross a lawn and you will find the cemetery car park (S/E).

Practical information

Parking
Parking at the starting point is the only difficulty on this short hike... If the small car park at the cemetery is full, there are two other parking options:
- Along the football stadium, right next door, Rue des Trembles after the school.
- Around the town hall, a few hundred metres east of the village, along the D160.

In dry weather, good walking shoes are sufficient for this hike on good paths and quiet roads. After a period of rain, there may be wet patches along the Chalouette between (5) and (9).

There are no water sources along the route.

A detailed map is required (at least the one accompanying this description).

Hike completed by the author on 21 June 2017.

In the nearby area

- Moulineux pond and Templar church in Moulineux (13th century), between (7) and (8) (private property).
- Sainte-Appoline spring, wash house and statue (9).
- Between (9) and (S/E), several old buildings and street names bear witness to the former presence of a Templar commandery in Chalou-Moulineux.
- Church of Chalou-Moulineux (11th-16th centuries) (10).

This short hike on flat terrain is very pleasant.
It includes sections through the forest and more open areas.
As always with Netra, the descriptions are accurate and very reliable... what more could you ask for?
There was no one around and the blue sky was out in full force

We joined this hike at point 5 by following the GRP from Chalo-Saint Mars.
Despite the damp weather and the sections along rivers, the paths were not very muddy.
A pleasant stop near the Sainte Apolline spring.
A long stretch on the D 160 but no traffic.
No one on the paths, just tree pruning in two places and a few scattered branches.
As previously mentioned, there are no longer any red and white markings
There is a signpost (red and yellow) just before the corner of the wall (point 7).
A small spelling correction: at point 3, it should be Chalo, not Chaleau.

Hello
To avoid most of the D160 paved road, I tried a slight modification to the route.

A pleasant walk, mainly through woodland, so cool and shaded and perfect in summer. No significant difficulties. At the start of the route, the large isolated walnut tree facing the vast agricultural plateau is superb (and it even has a swing!). Very pretty pond and beautiful view of the ruined church in Molineux. The Sainte Apolline fountain is a charming spot. Pretty country church in Chalou and beautiful view of the village. Thank you to the writer.

The signposting has changed -

Point 1 there is a signpost shortly before the EDF transformer (and the irrigation pumping station) with the Hurepoix GRP markings

Point 5: The red and white markings have completely disappeared (the GR 111 has been removed, except on the IGN map); follow the red and yellow markings of the Hurepoix GRP (but there are very few markings). Follow these markings to point 7.

Point 7: here again, the red and white markings have disappeared. The entire right side of the path is occupied by the marshy valley of the Marette and Chalouette

Point 9 Gate on the right (at the Voie des Hospitaliers).

I included this route in my hike on Monday, 31 August 2020, in the Chalouette Valley, covering 17 km 760 metres with an elevation gain of 305 metres.
The highlights are: Chalo Saint-Mars, Chalou with its stone houses and the Sainte Apolline wash house, and Moulineux with its pond and the remains of its church, not to mention the vast Beauceron farms.

A great walk with no difficulties. Don't be put off by the stretch along the road, as the rest of the route is really worth it.
It's a shame you can't get closer to the Templar church in Moulineux, but the lake is so charming that it more than makes up for it.
Pretty paths, beautiful regional houses, the lake, the Sainte-Apolline spring, lots of flowers (in mid-May the wild roses are in full bloom and the water lilies are starting to bloom, reaching their peak in June)... It's really pleasant after being cooped up for two months.
Thank you, Netra!

Apart from the stretch along the small, unpleasant tarmac road, which is not ideal for groups, this is a very beautiful walk with a variety of landscapes and heritage sites to admire. This walk is probably best avoided in winter when the riverbanks are likely to be muddy.
Thank you for this very enjoyable route!

An easy walk, shaded at this time of year, along charming riverbanks.
The church in Moulineux must be more visible without the leaves on the trees! :-))

A short, easy walk, shaded at this time of year, with charming riverside scenery..
The leaves still on the trees slightly obscure the beautiful church of Moulineux (ThomasBeckett?)

this is a hike to do in summer as it is often shaded. The section on the road is short but be careful nonetheless!

Very nice walk. We did the route in reverse. There are roads, fields and shady woods.
there were 40 of us and it took us 1 hour and 10 minutes longer than indicated (including stops for snacks and technical issues). We passed by the spring with a view of the old Templar church behind us.

Very nice route, very well explained. The only downside is that the section on the narrow road between points 2 and 4 can be uncomfortable when two vehicles pass each other at the same time, as was the case when we were there.
However, after point 4, the route is superb and culminates at the spring below the village.
