The Church of Prinçay and the Château de la Roche du Maine

A short hike mainly through fields, discovering a beautiful Romanesque church (later remodelled) and a beautiful Renaissance castle. There are a few views of the countryside.

Description of the walk

Park in the small car park at Prinçay church.

No signposts

(S/E) When you leave the car park, turn left. Immediately take the first left (war memorial) and walk along the cemetery on your right. The tarmac then gives way to a farm track.

(1) Take the first path on the right and climb slightly. At the intersection at the corner of an open garden with a few small trees, continue straight ahead. Further on, you will rejoin the tarmac and come to a crossroads at a place called La Gibourgère.

(2) Then turn left onto a small road. Cross a dead end on the right, turn left and descend gently.

(3) Then turn right into a dead-end road towards La Guérochère. Cross the hamlet (beautiful house at no. 5).

(4) At the end of the tarmac road, continue along a track and descend gently (note two large isolated poplar trees on the right). Cross a stream and follow a wood on your right.

(5) Ignore a path on the right (not shown on the map) and turn left onto the main path between two fields. Ignore a grassy lane on the right and follow the woods on your right again. You will come out onto a small road.

(6) Follow it to the right until the end.

(7) Turn left onto a larger road. Ignore the access road to Les Loges on the left, pass the foot of a large isolated chestnut tree and continue straight ahead.

(8) At the crossroads, continue straight ahead on the D7 towards Richelieu. Take the first road on the left, just after a road sign seen from behind. Alternate between shaded and open sections. Continue slightly uphill between the fields and note the Château de la Roche du Maine on the left. You will come out onto a small road.

(9) Follow it to the left (castle on the right in the middle of the trees and Prinçay church in the distance opposite).

(10) At the stop sign, cross the D66 and turn onto the D46a opposite, heading towards Prinçay. Continue straight ahead, enter the village and you will soon see the church (S/E).
