Description of the walk

Access: from Tours, take the D943 towards Loches, then, shortly after the Chambray exit, turn right towards Esvres. Drive through the village and, after passing the church, turn right at the three-way junction. Take the first road on the right, which crosses the Indre river, then turn left just before crossing the railway line. Continue along this road, which crosses the railway line again further on. Leave your car in a parking space just on the other side of the railway line.

This route is not signposted

(S/E) On foot, continue along this road towards the south, following theGR®®46(red and white markings). Pass the first road on the left and continue.

(1) Turn left towards Moulin de Sauquet and cross the Échandon. Further on (elevation 79), turn right onto a path that enters the woods. Continue straight ahead on theGR®® until you reach a road.

(2) Leave theGR®®46, which turns right, and continue straight ahead to the Château de Montchenain and its 14th-century gate. Retrace your steps.

(2) Turn left onto theGR®®46towards Azay-le-Rideau. Descend quickly to the Échandon stream.

(3) Cross a Gallo-Roman bridge (Pont Girault on the map). Take a path on the right a few metres after crossing to the other bank. Continue along the left bank of the stream. Further on, the path veers to the left and joins a crossroads.

(4) Leave a path on the left and continue on the trail, which itself veers left shortly afterwards. Cross a stream, the Mouru, before reaching a road.

(5) Take the road on the right and continue along it. Pass a cottage and, shortly afterwards, you will see some tufa springs on the left. You will reach a crossroads.

(6) Take a path on the left that leads to fields on the hillside. Continue straight ahead. At the intersection with a road (elevation 92), take the road opposite and continue straight ahead until you reach another intersection at a place called La Brosse.

(7) Take the road opposite to Château de Taffoneau. Shortly before reaching the château, take the road on the left at the cross. Then take the first road on the right. Cross over a stream below.

(8) Cross a larger stream, the Becquet, over a bridge (on the map, this stream is called the Taffoneau stream). Continue along the road until you reach a path on the right that leads to a farm, Touchemarie.

(9) Take this path (leaving theGR®®46, which continues along the road). Turn left in front of the farm entrance. Continue to the entrance of the next hamlet.

(10) Take a path on the right, before the first house. Turn left at the fork and continue along this narrow path that winds between the trees on the left bank of the Becquet, which remains visible. Reach a bridge and continue for a few metres.

(11) Take a path that climbs to the left. You will come to a road. Turn right, then take the second street on the right at the next intersection. Continue straight ahead for about 800 metres until you reach an intersection.

(12) Follow the signs for La Cathelinière on the left. At the next intersection, turn left. Pass close to the Moulin de Port Joie mill, then walk along the Indre river. Further on, walk along the railway line until you reach an intersection.

(13) Cross to the left for a short round trip to the bridges that span the Échandon and Indre rivers at their confluence.
On the way back, take the road on the left before crossing the railway line and continue along this road to return to the car park (S/E), passing close to the wind turbine on the left and the Château de Vilaine on the right, on the heights.

Notes

In winter, good waterproof shoes and possibly gaiters or rain trousers are necessary because of the mud on these wet paths, even in summer.

It is really worth doing this route in winter, even if the paths are very muddy, as water is everywhere in the landscape. The Indre and Echandon rivers are in flood, and the numerous streams are overflowing with water, giving the impression of being in the middle of the mountains.

In Esvres, at the confluence of the Echandon and Indre rivers, stands a church founded in 470, one of the oldest in the department.

At the end of the trail, you will pass close to the Bollée windmill, built in 1898 by Ernest and Auguste Bollée to pump and raise water to a height of 30 metres (information panel on site).

A very bucolic setting with beautiful sights to discover, including a castle, bridge and river. We highly recommend it.

A pleasant walk despite the mud and hail,
which had nothing to do with the CX bikes that did the circuit.

We only did the first half of the route. There are some pleasant sections in the woods, but the plateau offers no shelter from the wind and sun.
Some muddy sections in the hollows.

Another high-quality description on Visorando, which is a valuable resource for those who are unfamiliar with the area.
Well done and thank you for making life easier for hikers.
A beautiful route, with a less pleasant section on the plateau, but it doesn't last too long and is
and is more than compensated for by the sections in the woods, the Gallo-Roman bridge and the beautiful houses.

We followed the route exactly. The quality of the details is perfect. Many thanks to the owner for allowing us to enjoy a wonderful escape for a few hours.
The wooded areas are very pleasant, as are the small roads, but the fields are a little less so. However, in the end, all the positive aspects of this ride win out. Some very nice photos, ending with a cute little four-legged animal...

In Esvres, there is a large car park in the town centre (swimming pool, mini stadium, motorhomes, etc.) — you can see it on the map. From there, it is easy to cross the railway line via the gates, then the Indre river via the old railway bridge. Follow the GR signs to join the circuit between 12 and 13.
I agree with Shinsky about the link between the two valleys, which is monotonous and lacks shade; the final stretch on tarmac to reach Esvres is also a bit tedious. But this is compensated for by the interest of the rest of the hike.

A great route for a nice half-day walk!
I arrived at the starting point very easily at around 7:00 a.m. and after a fairly quiet start to the hike, I came to a wooded area (after the Moulin de Sauquet).
From there, I was treated to a veritable cornucopia of animal species. A dozen or so deer were out and about after what must have been a quiet night with no visitors. I also spotted several hares.
The birdlife was not to be outdone, as I was able to photograph a zizi bunting and a great spotted woodpecker.

The heritage aspect was also well represented with the Gallo-Roman bridge and the wind turbine at the end of the trail!

The only downside I would mention is the middle section of the hike, which is on the plateau in the agricultural plains. Compared to the other parts of the hike, I was less impressed (wide open spaces, open fields, etc.). This is obviously just my personal opinion, and I understand that connecting the two valleys in a single hike necessarily involves passing through this type of area.

Apart from this short, less interesting section, it was a very good outing.

In short, a hike that I would recommend.
