Chevanel - Vaux-en-Bugey

(D) Start this fourth day by heading towards the centre of the village of Chevanel and turn right onto Rue de la Rochette. Continue for 300 m past the wash house, until you reach the Y-junction.
(1) Head right, south-west, towards Jujurieux, following the red and white markings of the GR®59. The path winds but generally heads south until you reach the hamlet of Champ Bon.
(2) Turn left and head towards the village of Jujurieux via Chemin de la Mouille. Continue until you reach the ‘Give Way’ sign.
(3) Continue straight on along the Chemin de la Brosse, which joins the Côte Levet.
(4) Turn right onto Rue de l’Église (against the flow of traffic), taking care. Continue in the same direction past the church, then the town hall (refreshments available in the street). Pass the castle via Chemin des Échelles and continue to the traffic lights on the D12.
(5) Cross the road to continue opposite on Chemin de Sécheron. At the multi-way junction, keep left and, 600 m further on, reach the hamlet of Varey. Cross the hamlet by going straight ahead, pass the fountain, then keep left at the three-way junction on Chemin des Vignes until you reach the last houses.
(6) Turn left onto a path, following the red and white markings of the GR®59. At the T-junction, turn right, cross the Bois de Varice and pass Côte Colomb.
(7) Keep heading in the same direction and, further on, let a hairpin bend on the left pass you by.
(8) Continue south, pass the hamlet of Les Granges and reach the hamlet of Dalivoy.
(9) When you reach the fountain, turn left onto Ruelle de la Flotière, then left again onto Route des Vignes. Continue on to reach the village of L’Abergement-de-Varey. Once at the entrance, keep left onto Rue de la Charrette
(10) At the wash house, continue straight on towards the east, then turn right just before the dead-end to continue along the grassy, stony path, following the GR® 59 markings.
(11) Ignore the signposted path leading off opposite, turn right and join the D63.
(12) Turn right, then at the memorial, take the path on the left.
(13) Carry straight on, do the same at the next junction and you’ll reach the hamlet of Brèdevant.
(14) Turn right, pass in front of the Auberge des Allymes, then keep left to go past the Château des Allymes below without going up to it.
(15) Cross the small Route des Allymes to reach the hamlet of the same name. Turn left onto the road.
(16) At the Chapelle Saint-Roch, leave the GR®59 and continue south-west along the Route du Maquis for about 3 km to reach the town of Ambérieu-en-Bugey.
(17) At the town entrance sign, turn left then right onto a small path to reach Chemin de la Jacinière. Turn right. At the end of the path, first turn left then right to continue along a narrow lane (Chemin en Rougetant) and rejoin the Route du Maquis.
(18) Continue right along this road until you reach the roundabout.
(19) Pass the first exit and head right along Rue du Pensionnat, going against the flow of traffic. At the end of this street, make the first turn left then right and continue until you reach Rue Amédée Bonnet.
(20) Turn left, then right at the junction onto Route de Bettant. Continue towards Vaux-en-Bugey. Leave the town of Ambérieu-en-Bugey, cross over the D1504 and then the tracks of the SNCF marshalling yard, and continue into the village of Bettant.
(21) At the stop sign, opposite the church, turn left towards Vaux-en-Bugey. After the dead-end (Impasse de la Cure), turn right onto Route de Vaux. At the left-hand bend, take the small path on the right which runs alongside a low boundary wall. At the end of the path, turn left, then continue right onto the D77a towards Vaux-en-Bugey.
(22) Leave the road and take a path on the right which later crosses back over to rejoin the road on the opposite side. Go straight on at the first junction, turn right at the next one and carry on straight to rejoin the D77a. Walk for about fifty metres.
(23) Turn left onto the GR®59 and climb up to the Chapelle de Nièvre to find the ideal spot for your camp (A).
