Park your car along the D63 next to the telephone box at the foot of the castle (parking is also available in front of the church in the village).
(S/E) Go up and cross the village, following the road towards Côte Savin. Go around the church on the right, then pass a cattle shed on your left and continue straight ahead on the Côte Savin road.
(1) Take the path that climbs up to the left at the end of the bend, pass by an apiary, turn left and continue to the crossroads (signpost "Sous la Tour").
(2) Continue along the path opposite (towards Salaport), climb up and pass beneath the radio transmitters.
(3) After about 700 metres, turn right and descend towards the hamlet of Salaport. When you reach the hamlet, turn right and follow the road downhill towards Côte Savin.
(4) At the entrance to this hamlet, take the path that descends to the left, cross the stream and continue straight ahead.
(5) At the top of the vineyards, turn right onto a path for about 100 metres, then right again and descend through the vineyards.
(6) Just before entering the woods, take a grassy path on the left that comes out under the road and follow it down to the bridge over the Oiselon river.
(7) Take the D63 on the left, follow it for about 700 metres, then turn right onto a path parallel to the road that climbs towards Varey.
(8) At the entrance to the village, turn 90° to the right (between the boules court and the sports field, towards "le Tour de Saint-Jean") onto a stony path that climbs up and joins a tarmac road. Turn right and continue after the reservoir along a forest track that climbs through the undergrowth. In wet weather, this section can be muddy and slippery on the way up. Follow the red and white markings ofthe GR®59until you reach a paved road.
(9) Take this road, going up to the left.
(10) Leave the paved road and continue straight ahead uphill on a gravel path, pass a fork and continue straight ahead for about 200 metres.
(11) Turn right (there may be a yellow cross) onto a path through the woods alongside a meadow.
(12) There are three options:
- Right: descend directly back to the start.
- Centre (gate): cross a sheep park via an easy, well-marked path (the gates may be locked when the park is in use).
- Left (marked on the map): go around the park on the outside, following the fence along a narrow and often precarious path that joins a track. Continue downhill.
(13) Turn left at the crossroads in front of a farm building and left again at the entrance to the village. Go down the street to join the D63 and the foot of the castle on the right (S/E).
! A stick to push them aside is very useful.
OINT 12. Option No. 3 is completely impassable. It is impossible to follow the trail to the end without climbing over the fence and crossing the meadow through very tall grass and over uneven ground. (Danger if there are sheep and their guard dogs!) In some places, I had to clear a path with my walking sticks!
