Île d’Arz, a hiker’s paradise

Come and set foot on this wild strip of land. With its gentle terrain and full of charm thanks to its varied landscapes, village and old manor houses weathered by time, Île d’Arz is a walker’s paradise. The coastal path takes you all the way round the island and offers superb views of the gulf. At Pointe du Berno, the tide mill built in the 16th century, restored by passionate volunteers, is now fully operational.

Description of the walk

To get to Île d'Arz, head towards Vannes. In Vannes, there are two options.
If you wish to depart from Vannes, follow signs for the Gare Maritime, 7 Allée Loïc Caradec. There are large car parks at the ferry terminal.
If you wish to set off from Port Blanc, follow signs for Vannes Ouest – Arradon – Île aux Moines, then follow signs for “Île aux Moines”. Parking at Port-Blanc in Baden is available in paid or free car parks. For the crossing, see the Practical Information section.

(S/E) After disembarking at Pointe du Béluré, follow the main road south-west and walk along Falaise beach. Pass Les Tamaris campsite and continue to the wooded area at the end of the beach.

(1) Take the small path on the right. At Étang du Moulin, stay on the dyke and continue until you reach the tide mill.

(2) Pass the mill and continue to the crossroads by the boat graveyard. Here, you can avoid going round the Pointe de Berno by heading straight on. Turn right to go round the Pointe de Berno: at the headland, you’ll have a view of the Mouchiouse and Piren islands. Follow the path south-east and continue to the junction where a shortcut is available.

(3) Walk along the left-hand side of the Étang du Moulin to the junction with Route de Bernod. If you need a snack, you can turn left onto Route de Bernod to find a small snack bar selling sandwiches.

(4) Follow the coastal path to the right. Pass the Jeunesse et Marine Sailing Club at the junction with Chemin du Penher. Continue along the coastal path to Brouhel Beach.

(5) Head north-east to go round Pointe de Brouel. You’ll see Île aux Moines opposite.

(5) Back at Brouhel Beach, continue along the beach towards the small wood to reach the northernmost point of the island: the rocky headland of Liousse. Here you’ll find a beautiful view of Île Ilur and the southern Gulf of Morbihan, described on a guide map. The headland is also home to the Pen Liouse dolmen, actually a group of three ruined dolmens dating from between 5000 and 2500 BC.

(6) Continue along the path which crosses over to the eastern side of the island. Pass an experimental vineyard before arriving at the Glénans sailing school.

(7) Continue along the coastal path to Kerolan beach, followed by Penera beach on the Cale de Pen Raz, which offers a beautiful view. There you’ll find picnic tables, or you can quickly head back to the island’s village for a quick refreshment break, for example!

(8) Resume your walk along the path that leads to the start of Fontaine Varia beach. Do feel free to head down to the beach to see the fountain itself.

(9) Please note: you must bear in mind the time of your return crossing to the mainland. To reach the port from here, depending on how much time you have left, you can either continue along the coastal path or follow the route back to the jetty more quickly.
Head north-west along Chemin de la Fontaine Varia and you’ll reach the village of Île d’Arz. Continue to the crossroads.

(10) Turn right (north-east) onto Avenue Charles de Gaulle. Walk past the restaurant “Au Perroquet Bleu” and continue until you reach the Calvaire de Kervio: a concrete cross on a stone plinth.

(11) Stay on Avenue Charles de Gaulle and continue to the southern end of Plage de la Falaise.

(1) Go straight on along the road that runs alongside the beach, which will take you back to the starting point and the pier for Vannes or Port Blanc (S/E).

Notes

Getting to Île d'Arz: two options.

Departure from Vannes
All year round, the Bateaux-Bus du Golfe company operates several daily sailings without the need for a booking, departing from the Vannes ferry terminal. The crossing takes 20 to 30 minutes before you disembark at the northern tip of Île d’Arz. Info.

Departure from Port Blanc
By boat: a 30-minute crossing with the ‘Izenah’ company. Departure at 9.45 am or in the afternoon at 2 pm, or take a cruise around the gulf: 1 hour 45 minutes plus drop-off on Île d'Arz.

For both options, make sure you note the return time and the company.
Please note: remember to book a few days in advance.

Picnic tables are available along the route, and refreshments or meals can be purchased in the village.

Hello,
Exploring the Île d'Arz on Thursday 26 December 2024 with my wife and our son (who is an adult).
The day after Christmas, there weren’t many people on the trail, but we weren’t alone either.
There was a mysterious atmosphere due to the mist, but the scenery was magnificent nonetheless and it was a lovely walk; Brittany is also beautiful in winter.
We spotted three dolphins in the distance swimming near Île IIur as we made our way up the eastern side of Pointe de Liouse.
However, it’s a bit of a mess around the dolmens at the headland; trees have been cut down, others uprooted, and we struggled to find the dolmens amidst the trunks, pieces of wood and windfall littering the area.
An easy walk, even for a hemiplegic like me with a paralysed arm, a rather stiff left leg and my walking stick fitted with a tip!
We took our time (a snack, taking in the views, photos, a coffee near the jetty...), arriving on the 9.10 am boat and leaving on the 3.10 pm one.
We thought it would be worth doing this walk again in the spring.
