The Fourasse Circular Loop

This route forms part of a network of 12 ‘Au cœur des Boucles’ trails around Liverdun, offering 80 km of footpaths marked with the oak leaf, the town’s emblem. They allow you to choose a walk to suit you – short, medium or longer – or to create your own route combining any of the four circular loops. These circular loops will introduce you to the old village, whose history is linked to the Moselle, and allow you to enjoy a varied array of woodland settings and sensitive natural areas. As you wander, you’ll discover breathtaking views of the Moselle valley and the medieval village.
The long Fourasse circular hike (marked with three green stripes) is a 4½-hour hike. This woodland trail takes you through a variety of forest habitats (coppice, high forest, wetland, deciduous and coniferous woodland). It is possible to complete the route by mountain bike; it’s very easy going apart from the lower section of the descent just before reaching the viewpoint (4).

Description of the walk

There is a small car park at the junction of Route de Frouard and Rue de Chatillon.

(S/E) Right from the start, after about 100 metres along Rue de Chatillon, turn right and continue until you reach a junction.

(1) Turn left onto the path which takes you up the slope known as ‘Côte du Bateau’ (the old ferry crossing) to the top of the communal woodland, where you can see the village of Liverdun on its southern slope. You’ll then walk through a forest of tall trees (passing, in particular, at the foot of a majestic beech tree). Along this stretch, a few clearings offer lovely views of Liverdun. Once at the top of the hill, at the crossroads, keep to the right.

(2) Turn right at the crossroads, which leads to the small Fourasse circular route on the left (marked with a single green stripe), and you’ll reach another junction.

(3) Turn right again at the crossroads, leaving the medium-length Fourasse circular loop (marked with a green double line) on your left. Begin the descent towards the bottom of the Vallon des Chouères. Mountain bikers take care: the upper section is very pleasant but the lower section is strewn with large stones.

(4) Once at the bottom, join the Route Forestière de Liverdun and follow it to the left (south-east) for about 2,500 metres until you reach the 267-metre mark.

(5) Leave the forest road by taking the path on the left, which passes through a darker area of fir forest before gradually climbing back towards the light along a lovely track for about 2,500 metres to the crossroads known as ‘Bouquet d’Arbres’ (stone marker).

(6) At the junction, take the path on the left to reach Liverdun, passing the junction with the ‘circular’ path (marked with two dashes).

(7) Pass this junction and head straight on towards Liverdun. Continue straight ahead until you reach a Y-junction ahead (circular route, 1 line).

(8) Keep to the left and continue straight ahead, taking Rue de Chatillon at the end of the walk (S/E).
