Start from the Lac d'en-Bas car park and the Sagnes Nature Reserve at the exit of La Godivelle coming from Égliseneuve or Montgreleix, on the right after the bridge over the Ruisseau de la Godivelle.
Part markedGR® 30 and Tour du Cézallier (Tour des Vaches Rouges)
(S/E) Take the D32 on the right at the car park exit towards the cemetery for about 800 m until you reach a good path on the left (altitude 1220 m).
(1) Turn left. The path crosses a peat bog, then a wood, and after a chicane, joins a very wide straight track for almost 1 km before arriving at an intersection (altitude 1212).
(2) Turn right and head towards Brion Haut and the signpost for "Brion Haut 1220 m".
Section markedGR® 4A and Tour du Cézallier (Tour des Vaches Rouges)
(3) Take the road on the right towards Jassy. Reach the top of the hamlet topped by "La Motte". Magnificent 360° view from the summit of the Puy-de-Dôme, the Massif du Sancy and the Monts du Cantal (the climb is a little steep but highly recommended). Continue along the road until you reach a track on the right before the hamlet of Brion Bas.
(4) Turn right onto this track. After about 1 km, you will come to a wide path (crossing a small stream). Go straight ahead and follow the Bois du Fraud on your right. At the end of the woods, the track joins the D32.
(5) Cross it and take the track opposite. After a short uphill section, the track levels out before descending to the road at Les Egouves.
(6) Turn left and head towards the hamlet of Jassy. Turn right at the first fork at the entrance to the hamlet. Just before the bridge over the Ruisseau de la Noue Haute, take the street on the left for a short detour to the waterfalls (signposted).
(7) Admire the waterfalls, retrace your steps to the bridge over the Ruisseau de la Noue Haute, cross it and continue to the next fork.
Offthe GR® and Hors Tour du Cézallier (Tour des Vaches Rouges)
(8) Turn right towards La Godivelle. After about 1,500 metres of gentle climbing, the road descends in two hairpin bends to the Couze d'Ardes, crosses a bridge and arrives at a fork (elevation 1,178 metres).
(9) Continue along the road to the right towards Lac de Saint-Alyre (sign for "Lac" almost faded) and reach the lake at La Clef du Lac (elevation 1227).
(10) Moderator's correction: follow the marked trail straight ahead to reach (S/E)
