Grand Colombier via Chanduraz

This little-used route offers an original approach to the Grand Colombier, with a rocky final ascent that adds a bit of spice to the hike! Nevertheless, it is manageable for the average hiker. The Chanduraz promontory, overlooking Lake Bourget, is well worth the effort... Not to mention the view from the Granges du Colombier.

Description of the walk

To get to the start, follow the D120 from Virieu-le-Petit towards Les Granges du Colombier. Park your car at the hairpin bend. See alternative car parks in “Practical Information”

(S/E) Take the path heading south, away from the hairpin bend. Walk downhill for 1 km.

(1) At the signpost indicating the direction of Chanduraz, follow the yellow markings; the path leaves the forest and heads into the meadows.

(2) At the junction of several paths (signpost), turn round to see the summit of the Grand Colombier (high-voltage pylon almost at the top). Continue in the same direction until you reach the Chanduraz promontory overlooking Lake Bourget.

(3) Take in the view and retrace your steps back to the signpost.

(2) Take the path that climbs diagonally (north-east) up the grassy slope and then, at the top, descends down the other side towards the Grand Colombier road (D120).

(4) Walk up this road, taking care of cyclists going uphill (slowly – do not get in their way) and downhill (quickly).

(5) At the signpost for La Pierre Amont, leave the road and take the path climbing to the left; it starts off gently but becomes a little trickier as it follows the ridge over fairly rocky ground, up to the high-voltage pylon. Then follow the path to the summit of Grand Colombier.

(6) Continue straight on to the pass below. At the pass, head down the road to the left (take care, watch out for cyclists!).

(7) Just before the hairpin bend, take a path on the left that descends the slope. At the bottom, head across country to Les Granges du Colombier (several buildings). Climb up behind the restaurant (closed in 2022), admire the view and head back down. Then continue down the pass road, turning right. Follow it to the car park (S/E).

Notes

The area is well signposted, with signposts.

3 possible starting points where you can park your car:

1) As indicated. There is space for a few cars, on the right when coming from Virieu-le-Petit. Use your GPS to find your way or when coming down from Granges du Colombier.

2) Park near Granges du Colombier (check that this is possible) and walk to the start/finish point, following the road. On the map, you can leave the road and take a path at about the two-thirds mark. Personally, I haven’t seen it.

3) Park at the Col du Grand Colombier. Downside: you do a large part of the descent at the start of the hike.

Worth a visit

Take care when going up and down the Grand Colombier road. Keep well to the right as cyclists come speeding down... and struggle on the climb.

Alternative:
At (1), turn right and follow the dotted pink circular route on the map. After a good descent, you climb back up towards Les Granges d’Izéna (a lovely spot) and Chanduraz. Thanks to whoever recommended this route to me.

View of Lake Bourget, particularly from Chanduraz.

Beautiful panorama as you climb behind the buildings of Les Granges du Colombier.

Panorama across the ridge and from the summit of the Grand Colombier over the Alps, with Annecy in the distance,...

An excellent excursion in a part of the Jura that is particularly striking for the views it offers hikers. Two highlights in my opinion: the climb up the Balcon des Crêtes and the ascent to the Croix du Colombier

This route isn’t very busy, except when starting from the mountain pastures. The climb is very steep between points 1 and 2, especially as the path is hard to find once you leave the forest. However, the scenery at Chanduraz is as impressive as ever. You can extend the route from point 2 by taking the path on the right that goes via Grange à Masse (this also avoids the climb up to the Pryses mountain pastures).
Otherwise, a very pleasant hike.
issue: in the mountain pastures near Chanduraz, we came across a trial motorcyclist who hesitated for a long time before giving way to us on the path before crossing the meadows. I thought the mountain pastures were designated as a Natura 2000 site, but this doesn’t seem to be strictly enforced.

OK, thanks
I don’t know it. When I used to live in Vaudeville, a long time ago, I used to cycle up there from all directions, and also go mountain biking from Les Plans d’Hotonnes and from Assin

We’d been on several hikes starting from the north side of Le Colombier, but this route is also very interesting and much less busy; definitely worth doing again

The walk doesn't start in Virieu-le-Petit at all. So don't get it wrong. Best regards

Just a quick note: there’s a BIG mistake regarding the elevation gain, due to an error in the altitude of Virieu-le-Petit, which is around 640m, not 1291m... so you need to add about 650m of elevation gain; it’s best to be aware of this...
