(S/E) From the car park, head left and follow the road for 200 m.

(1) Turn right onto a track towards Berzgumm, Giferspitz and Wasserngrat. Further up, another track coming from the right joins this route. Continue straight on until the fork a few metres further on.

(2) Turn left towards Berzgumm and Giferspitz. Cross the bridge over the stream.

(3) Just after crossing the stream, take the barely visible path on the right at the edge of a copse. Follow the red and white markings. The path then leads onto a road. Follow it to the right for about a hundred metres.

(4) Continue left, heading due north. Pass the farms. The climb continues through the mountain pastures. The path is not always very visible, but it is easy to follow the red and white markings. The route leads onto a road.

(5) Head up the road ahead until you reach another junction.

(6) Continue along the road straight ahead to Berzgumm.

(7) Turn right into the mountain pasture, heading towards Giferspitz and Louwenehore. The climb is steep and the path is once again difficult to see. Follow the red and white markings. Reach Giferhüttli (signpost).

(8) Continue straight ahead, due south. The path then begins a very steep climb, with some tight hairpin bends, where you may need to use your hands to negotiate certain rocky slabs. The path leads onto a ridge which you follow, before reaching a signpost marked ‘Giferspitz’.

(9) Turn right to reach the summit of the Giferspitz itself.

(10) Take a moment to admire the view of the Vaud, Fribourg and Bernese Alps. Return to the junction via the same route.

(9) Continue straight ahead towards Louwenehore and Wasserngrat. Follow the path to the summit of Louwenehore.

(11) Enjoy the view of the Giferspitz and the Vaud, Fribourg and Bern Alps. Begin the descent, veering to the right towards Turnelssattel. This is very steep and can be slippery, particularly in wet weather.

(12) This path joins another coming from Türli (on the left). Continue straight on towards Turnelssattel, Wasserngrat-Gstaad and Lauenen. Reach the Turnelssattel junction.

(13) Turn right, heading due east towards Alp Turnels, Wasserngratbahn and Gstaad.

(14) Walk past the farm and turn left onto the track. Follow the track down to the junction of the circular route.

(2) Follow the same route as on the way out, in the opposite direction, to return to the car park (S/E).

Notes

Swiss National Map 3304T – Gstaad – Lenk – Adelboden.

Equipment: good walking shoes and walking poles.

Markings: White and red.
For further information on trail markings in Switzerland, see the “Hiking Trail Categories” section on the Suisse Rando website.

Difficulty: a mountain hiking route reserved for experienced hikers with sure-footedness. The difficulty stems in particular from the length and significant elevation gain. Furthermore, the ascent route includes betweeneight andnine unmarked T3 sections, where using your hands makes it easier and safer to cross some rocky slabs. Those prone to vertigo should also take care, as certain sections may feel a little exposed.

Our hikes wouldn’t be nearly as rewarding without the contribution of the people who live in and look after the mountains. But they need us too. Please support local businesses!

If you wish to check train and bus timetables, use the “SBB Mobile” app on your phone rather than the SBB website. The “Mobile CFF” app also includes “EasyRide”, which allows you to buy a ticket online and automatically calculates the cost from your starting point to your destination. You might also want to consider the “Fairtiq” app, which offers the same service regardless of the public transport used – whether it’s trains, PostBus, urban transport or even ski lifts – either on their own or in combination.
