Brotonne Forest opposite Jumièges

A walk through the heart of the state-owned forest, shaded and ideal on a hot summer’s day. The walk begins with a superb view over the Seine valley and Jumièges Abbey. The forest is home to many remarkable trees.

Description of the walk

The walk follows part of route no. 24. The start is from the car park on the D913 road leading to the orientation table.

(S/E) From the car park, take the path towards the orientation table and the view over the Seine valley. There are picnic tables near the orientation table.

(1) Retrace your steps back to the car park.

(S/E) Leave the car park by following the old road to the right.

(2) After walking alongside the D913 for a few metres, take the path that leads into the forest on the right. The path turns left to follow the main road. At the road (D143), follow it for a few metres to the left and cross the D913 (caution: heavy traffic) to take the forest road opposite.

(3) Take the first path on the right, La Sente aux Moines. At the next junction, turn left, then immediately right, and continue straight ahead.

(4) Cross the Chemin du Gros Houx to continue on the path opposite. Follow it down towards the valley.

(5) Follow the valley on the left until the next junction.

(6) From here, you can make a round trip to the former priory of Torps (private property). To do this, turn right and then immediately right onto the path that runs along the valley on the other side.

(7) Retrace your steps to the previous fork.

(6) Follow thesecond pathon the left, then turn onto the path on the right (marker 14). At a hairpin bend, leave the path and take the track facing you to the left of the path. Follow the track until you reach the second path on the left.

(8) Take the path climbing up to the left. At the end of the path, turn right until you reach the forest track. Cross it and take the path on the left just at the entrance to the track, following it to the next forest track.

(9) Turn onto the path on the right, then take the first path leading uphill to the left.

(10) Take theGR®23on the left and follow it, ignoring the first path. Turn onto the second path on the right, which climbs towards the D913. Follow it to the left for a few metres to return to the car park entrance (S/E).

We went on this walk in early May, on a very hot day. We chose this route to stay in the shade, and that was indeed the case for most of the way. The route is pleasant without being exceptional; one criticism is the proximity of the road between markers D and 3, and then between markers 10 and A. The two remarkable trees, the ‘joined beech trees’ and the ‘barrel oak’, are certainly worth a look. As for navigation, the route largely follows the well-signposted departmental trail no. 24, and on two occasions we followed this instead of the planned route (just after marker 2, where we didn’t spot the path running parallel to the road, and just after marker 4).

A lovely walk following the GPS route. Stunning views of the Seine and Jumièges Abbey. A pleasant walk through the woods, with no difficulty at all. Despite the glorious sunshine, I didn’t see a soul. Thank you very much for sharing.

A very pleasant walk through the woods with just one steep slope!
You need to pay attention to stay on the path between points 4 and 8

A lovely walk. Easy, with no significant elevation gain. Wide, well-maintained paths.
Another advantage of this walk is that, with the help of the map showing plenty of paths, you can adjust the duration (making it longer or shorter) by taking different routes without the risk of getting lost.

A lovely walk through the forest. There’s a steep climb leading up to checkpoint 9. Take care between checkpoints 2 and 3, and also between checkpoints 4 and 5, as the red route doesn’t always follow the paths and it’s easy to go astray. At the start, there’s a stunning view of the Seine and Jumièges Abbey. Although we did the walk on a Saturday afternoon, we didn’t meet a single person along the way.
