Start and finish: car park at the Cour du Chapitre in Neuwiller-lès-Saverne.
(S/E) Head up Rue du Général Koenig to the left as you leave the courtyard. Then turn right onto Rue du 22 Novembre.
(1) At the Fork in the road, about 350 metres further on, turn left into Rue du Herrenstein (signposted ‘Blue Saltire’ by the Club Vosgien). At the end of the street, continue along the forest track.
(2) At the Fork in the road, turn right onto the path marked with a Red Triangle. Pass a path branching off to the right and then to the left, and join the D134.
(3) Follow it to the left for 250 m.
(4) Leave the road and take a path on the left which cuts across a hairpin bend.
Return to the D134 and follow it to the left.
(5) After the Fork in the road, leave the road and take the path on the right, marked with a Blue Rectangle. Follow this marking, go round the Brudesberg on the right and rejoin the D14.
(6) Turn left onto the path which leads first to the riding centre.
(7) Take a round trip to the Buddhist temple.
Continue along the path marked with a Blue Rectangle and enter the village of Weiterwiller to join the D7 (main street).
(8) Turn left and continue for about 300 metres.
(9) Take Rue des Seigneurs, turning left again. The street gives way to a path which you should follow, ignoring the numerous side paths branching off to the right and left.
(10) You’ll reach the Pfannenfelsen Rock. It’s a shame that the panoramic view is obscured by young trees. Carry on along this path.
(11) The markings change to the Red Cross. Take the path opposite, not the one on the left which leads back down towards Neuwiller. Continue along this path until you reach the D134. Follow it to the right for a few metres.
(12) Turn onto the path on the left and follow it. Turn left once, then right, and join the forest track.
(13) Cross it and, once again, follow the Red Cross markings, ignoring all paths to the right and left, to reach the Grotte d’Amour. Inside, there is a magnificent round table surrounded by a bench, both carved from the pink sandstone of the Vosges.
(14) Continue on to Hunebourg Castle.
(15) Set off again along the forest road.
(16) At the junction, take the path marked with a Blue Saltire sign directly opposite. Make sure you follow these markings carefully as there are many paths.
(17) Cross the Maibaechel stream and continue to the large junction of forest tracks.
(18) Turn right to reach the ruins of Herrenstein Castle.
(19) Return to the crossroads, turn right onto the forest road, which gives way to a path still marked with a Blue Saltire. Continue to the Fork in the road you passed on the way there.
(2) Carry on straight ahead. The return journey to the car park takes a different route to the outward journey, allowing you to discover some pretty half-timbered houses. To do this, once on Rue du 11 Novembre, turn right into Rue du Wingert, then left down a side street to join Rue des Bénédictins and finally, turn left one last time into Rue Hedwic, which takes you back to the starting point (S/E).
