Start at the intersection between Rue d'Oberhof and Rue des Comtes de Rosen. There is a car park at the beginning of this street.
Another possible starting point is the car park located at the exit of the village on Rue d'Oberhof.
(S/E) Turn right, heading west, onto Rue d'Oberhoff, following the double red/yellow ring markings towards the village exit, until you reach the water pumping station.
(1) Take the path on the right towards the forest, marked with a red ring. After the climb, the path splits. Take the one that makes a wide right turn, marked with a blue triangle. Ignore a path on the right (towards the old Gauxberg quarry), then two others on the left. At the end of the bend, you will arrive at the crossroads with the path marked with a blue triangle/red ring.
(2) Take this path on the left, heading north, for a few dozen metres and turn right, heading north-east, following the Blue Triangle markings. About 300 m further on, turn left, heading north-west, cross the wide path and take a small path, still heading north-west, until you reach the crossroads that enters the private estate of Herrenstein. See Practical Information.
(3) Continue climbing, following the blue triangle markings, until you reach the ruins of Herrenstein Castle.
(4) Once you reach the castle site, continue along the path to enter the castle grounds and explore the ruins. Then return to the main path and begin the descent, following the blue triangle markings.
After a left turn, the path arrives at a fork in the road.
(5) Be careful with the vegetation, as the start of this path is often a little hidden. Follow the blue triangle to the right, and the path descends to the next intersection.
(6) Three Oaks Crossroads, table and benches. Leave the Blue Triangle markings and take the path on the left, heading south, following the Blue Easel markings towards Hunebourg Castle, which first passes by the Hoelzernerbrunnen spring. After about 500 metres, leave the main path and take the path on the left that descends towards the spring.
(7) The spring is a remarkable site with a magnificent stone table surrounded by four benches. Continue along the path. About 400 m after the spring, leave the main path and take the path on the right (at the hunters' lookout point), ignoring the crossroads, and you will arrive at the private ponds and the Maibaechel forest road, still following the Chevalet Bleu markings.
(8) Cross the stream and then the road, take the sandstone steps and continue following the Chevalet Bleu markings. Begin the ascent to Hunebourg Castle.
(9) At the crossroads with multiple paths, continue straight ahead (Chevalet Bleu). Cross a road, take the small path, which immediately leads to the Hunebourg forest road, and follow it to the right.
(10) Continue along the forest road, ignoring the access to a forest house on the left. Reach the site of Hunebourg Castle (private property, it is not possible to enter but the round trip is still worth it).
(11) Retrace your steps and pass the forest house.
(10) About 100 metres after the forest house, turn right onto the Sentiers des Roches trail, marked with a blue triangle. Climb up this very pleasant trail.
(12) At the crossroads, turn left, heading south-east, onto theGR®531. Begin the descent towards the valley for about 5 km, staying on the main path, marked with a blue rectangle. After several hairpin bends, you will reach the D133.
(13) Cross the road, taking care as there may be heavy traffic. Cross the bridge over the southern Zinsel, known as the "Laïbruck", and take the path on the left, heading east for about 500 m, which runs alongside the Highland Cattle park, marked with a blue rectangle with a white cross.
(14) At the end of the park, take the path on the left, heading north, cross the footbridge and join Rue d'Oberdorf near the pumping station, heading east.
(1) Continue straight ahead and return to the starting point and car park via the same route you took on the way there (S/E).
