Description of the walk

Start from La Ferté-sous-Jouarre station (Transilien line P, between Paris-Est and Château-Thierry, with trains running hourly). Take the footbridge (Bus exit) or the underpass.

(S/E) With your back to the station, turn left onto the pavement of Avenue de la Gare and cross the bridge over the railway line. Immediately turn left onto Rue Duburcq Clément and follow it to Ruelle aux Loups.

Red and white markings for the GR® 14A

(1) Turn right as you climb the alley. At the top, turn left and walk alongside a wire fence. Enter the Bois de la Barre, ignoring the various paths until you reach the star-shaped junction.

(2) Take thefirst path on the right, “le Sentier des Meuliers”, then turn left after 100 metres (from the junction, look for the first sign about the “discovery” of the quarries). Retrace your steps and turn right to reach the interpretation centre, “Transporteur aérien”.

(3) Turn right, then climb the stairs on the right and follow this educational trail (theme: Water and Mud); at the bottom of a flight of steps, you can turn right onto the Sentier des Meuliers until you reach the “Le Colorado” information boards. Then retrace your steps and turn right, heading back up to the exit of the Bois de la Barre.

End of the red/white markings

(4) Turn right and then immediately left onto Rue de Rosebois. Follow this road until you reach Rue Léon Glaize.

(5) Turn left, then right onto Rue de la Source. Continue to Rue du Lavoir.

(6) Turn left, then right to follow Rue Simon Roussel. Arrive at Favières.

(7) Ignore Rue de Favières on the right, continue straight on until you reach number 24 on the street and take a path on the right (between two houses) which leads down to Avenue de Château-Thierry. Cross this avenue (D603) at the pedestrian crossing and head left for a few metres.

(8) Turn right onto Ruelle du Petit Bécart. Continue until you reach Chemin de la Bergette.

(9) Turn right and walk down the path to enter the Bois de la Bergette, go through the gate and follow the nature trail, keeping to the left until you reach the road, which marks the exit from the nature reserve.

(10) Cross the D80, go under the railway bridge, then turn right at the Marne. Pass the few houses to find the start of a path.

(11) Take the path on the left leading to the “Promenade de l’Île Cartier”, which runs alongside the Marne to Boulevard du 8 mai 1945. Continue to Rue des Pelletiers.

(12) Turn right onto it, pass Place de l’Hôtel de Ville, and continue along Rue Michel Fauvet. At the top of this street, turn left into a street running parallel to Avenue de la Gare to reach La Ferté-sous-Jouarre station. (S/E)

All shops in La Ferté-sous-Jouarre.
Remember to bring some snacks and plenty of water.
Wear good walking shoes and bring walking poles: the rocks are slippery in some parts of the woods.

Worth a visit

- The Bois de la Barre and Bois de la Bergette are sensitive natural areas managed by the Seine-et-Marne department.
Covering an area of 33 hectares, the Bois de la Barre nature reserve is a wooded hillside that was once used for quarrying millstone. A educational route following the "Sentier des Meuliers" allows walkers to discover the site from both a historical and ecological perspective.
- The banks of the Marne and its wildlife, the Ferté-sous-Jouarre boat mooring.
- Saint-Étienne-et-Saint-Denis Church (15th–18th centuries),
- Town Hall.

We went on this walk on 27 April. The route was lovely, and the paths were easy to follow. I really liked the comic-style explanations (accessible to everyone) and the variety of landscapes (forest, banks of the Marne). The route details were comprehensive. There are one or two short tricky sections for people who find it difficult to climb or descend steep slopes. These are manageable with walking poles.

Virtually identical to the blue markings on the course, which are easier to follow than the text!

Hike taken on Sunday morning, 15 December.
An easy route with a slight elevation gain.
It passes through the pretty centre of La Ferté-sous-Jouarre before heading to the Bois de la Barre and then the Bois de la Bergette.
A very pleasant walk, well signposted along very well-maintained paths, which is rare in the region at the moment. We were also able to pop round to the small Sunday morning market set up in the Town Hall Square.
Well worth doing again
