Between Étroubles and Saint-Rhémy-en-Bosses

A route to discover the typical villages that line the famous Col du Grand Saint-Bernard road. On the way there, you will follow the Via Francigena to climb up to the village of Saint-Rhémy-en-Bosses, renowned for its cured ham. You will also pass through the villages of Étroubles, Saint-Oyen, Cerisey and Les Bosses, characterised by stone chalets with slate roofs.

Description of the walk

From Switzerland, take the Col du Grand Saint-Bernard road to Sembrancher E21, cross over to the Italian side and descend via the S27 to the village of Étroubles. From Aosta, take the Col du Grand Saint Bernard road S27 to the village of Étroubles. In Étroubles, park in the car park near the Hotel Beauséjour.

(S/E) From the car park, take the covered passageway over the Artanavaz torrent. Cross the village via Rue du Mont Vélan until you reach the intersection with Rue Albert Deffeyes.

Follow the Via Francigena or Alta Via No. 1 signs.

(1) Head north-west to join the road to the Col du Grand Saint-Bernard and follow it for about 200 metres. Join the Via Fancigena (a small path above the road to the pass). Cross the road to the Col du Grand-Saint Bernard with caution and turn left towards the village of Saint-Oyen.

(2) In Saint Oyen, turn right and go up a narrow street towards Rue Verraz. Turn left and continue to the next intersection.

Signposting Via Francigena and sentiero N°14d

(3) Look carefully for the sign indicating the direction of Cerisey via Ru Neuf No. 14D. Take a small path that leads to a small street. Cross it and take Sentier No. 14d just opposite.

(4) At the sign, head west on this path that follows an irrigation canal (known as a bisse in Swiss German). Continue along the Ru Neuf until you come to a small road that leads to Cerisey.

(5) Turn right and enter the hamlet of Cerisey.

(6) In the bend, turn left after the first house. Cross the Torrente del Gran San Bernardo. Walk towards the village of Les Bosses. Return to the castle and church of Les Bosses.

(7) Cross the village of Les Bosses until you reach the entrance to a tunnel under the Route du Col du Grand Saint Bernard.

(8) Pass under the pass road and leave the village of Les Bosses to the north-east.

(9) Head northeast, then north, and follow a pleasant path to the pretty village of Saint-Rémy en Bosses.

(10) Visit the village, its church of San Remigio, and its famous ham drying workshop. (Jambon de Bosses). Return to the point (5) by following the same route as on the way there.

(5) Leave the path you took on the way there on your left, continue straight ahead on the small road and cross the bridge over the Torrente Artanavaz.

(11) Turn left onto the road towards Saint Oyen. Cross the Torrente de Flassin and pass the Pineta campsite. Continue to the Mulino campsite car park.

Signpost Sentierio No. 6c

(12) Pass the campsite and arrive at a picnic area on the banks of the Torrente Artanavaz.

(13) Follow trail No. 6c, which offers a fitness trail. After a short climb through the forest, you will reach the car park in Etroubles (S/E).
