Between Causse and Ségala

Hike through agricultural land, alternating between the stony paths of the Causse plateau to the west and the chestnut forests typical of the Ségala region to the south-east.
Remarkable rural heritage punctuates the trail: cazelles and garriottes, stone bread ovens, wash houses and Quercy houses with conical roofs.
This route is marked along its entire length: aPR®: yellow markings (namedPR®2on the wooden signs) which sometimes follows theGRP® route: red and yellow markings.

Description of the walk

Park on the main square in the village of Castanet, around the war memorial.

(S/E) Head west on the D75, pass the town hall and continue to the crossroads.

(1) At the top of the hill, follow signs for Parisot, passing the hamlet of Caussanel on your right.

(2) At the bend in the road, follow a path straight ahead into the woods. You will rejoin the Parisot road in the valley.

(3) After the bridge, turn right onto a small road that climbs towards Mas de Maillet. After the farm, continue along a grassy path.

(4) Turn left in the middle of the fields and continue to the hamlet of Cambayrac.

(5) Cross the hamlet and follow the small tarmac road. At the junction with the D84, continue straight ahead.

(6) Leave the path marked in red and yellow. Turn right onto a path lined with low walls. Cross a tarmac road (old cross) and continue straight ahead.

(7) At the crossroads, turn right and then immediately left. At this point, there is a short alternative route to the left towards Causseviel. Continue towards the Pailhas farm.

(8) Before the farm, descend to the left along a stony path. Cross a road, reach the lake and continue to the right, leaving the dyke on your left.

(9) Return eastwards towards Le Cuzoul.

(10) When you cross the road, continue straight ahead. On your left is the Cuzoul cemetery with an old chapel. Descend halfway down the slope into the valley.

(11) At Mas de Bringou, turn left. Descend into the valley to reach Causseviel. In the village, turn right.

(12) Descend to the right towards the Baye stream. Continue along the path, cross the Meune and follow the small tarmac road to Mas de Bonnet.

(13) At the entrance to the hamlet, turn left towards Mas del Sol.

(14) At the exit of the hamlet, follow a path on the right and cross the Fontfrèche farm.

(15) When you reach the D84, turn left and follow the road for a few hundred metres.

(16) Halfway down the hill, take a grassy path on the right that descends towards a chestnut forest. Cross the Font de Clario stream, then the hamlet of La Pialle and the Bourgat stream. Climb back up into the forest to reach Le Pech.

(17) Cross the hamlet, descend towards Touron and follow a small tarmac road then a path along the side of the valley.

(18) When you reach the road, turn left and head west towards the village of Castanet and the car park where you started (S/E).

This hike was approved in June 2025 but has not yet taken place. It will be done in mid-December!

I will see if it is still going ahead or not.

Some very pretty restored houses, particularly in Cambayrac and its castle, which cannot be approached as it is private property. Note point 6: leave the red and yellow marked path, turn right and follow a beautiful path between two limestone walls.
A beautiful walk and very well marked.
I recommend it, even if you sometimes have to walk on very quiet roads.

A quick note on point "6": be sure to veer off to the right and ignore the yellow cross mark on the PR trail, which is confusing and discourages you from going in that direction... You must go that way! (Private property on the left with a beautiful restored garriotte).
A very beautiful walk, alternating between limestone plateaus in the first part and then rolling hills, with beautiful passages through chestnut groves.
There are quite a few tarmac roads but with little traffic, especially at the start from Castanet (approx. 1 km).
Otherwise, the paths are splendid and remarkably well maintained (the signposting is excellent, except for the small restriction at point "6" noted above).

Hike completed by mountain bike, with a short detour to reach Lake Parisot and its village, following the GR de Pays "de Monteils à Loze" trail.
The paths are very clean and well marked.
On the way back to Castanet, it is very pleasant to stop and admire the view of the Tarn-et-Garonne and the Grésigne forest.

Very well-maintained trail, alternating between limestone plateaus and wooded meadows with lots of herds of cows and their calves (Ségala obliges). Be careful with the yellow markings for the short hiking trails (PR) in the municipality, which you will come across very often and which you do not necessarily have to follow.
