In the Meudon Forest, from Sèvres-Rive-Gauche to Meudon

A pleasant, easy day’s walk in the forest, just a stone’s throw from Paris by train. You’ll see beautiful scenery, lovely trees and ponds. There are a few hills.

Description of the walk

Start near the Sèvres Rive Gauche SNCF station. From the station, walk down alongside the tracks away from Paris, heading west, until you reach a large tunnel under the tracks.

No signposting.

(S) At the tunnel, head due south along Rue des Fontaines, which climbs steeply, until you reach the cul-de-sac. Enter the forest by turning right, heading west, onto a path that climbs steeply via a flight of steps. At the junction with Rue de la Garenne, turn left diagonally onto Rue des Guinguettes, then at the next junction, turn left onto Route Forestière de Gaillardon. You’ll reach the Belle Étoile junction, with a cemetery on your left.

Red-and-white markings (GR®).

At the Belle Étoile junction, follow the markings south-west, turning diagonally left onto a wide avenue lined with tall oak trees (Route des Postillons).

(1) At the (next) Carrefour de la Femme sans Tête, plot number 58, head south-west, turning diagonally left onto the slightly uphill Route de Morval, marked with yellow signpost no. 10. At the next junction, the Doisu junction (plot 59), take a small path straight ahead, which descends increasingly steeply, running parallel to a sunken track, and joins the Route du Pavé des Gardes (D 181).

(2) Cross the road at the traffic lights. Opposite, take a small path to the left which climbs gently towards the south-east.

(3) At a fork in the middle of the forest, with no obvious landmarks (the Carrefour des Fonds de Morval), head diagonally right, slightly uphill towards the south-east, along plot 65.

400m further on, at plot 61, turn sharply left uphill (north-west).

(4) 300 m further on, when you have almost reached the top of the climb, take a sharp right-hand bend, still following the markings, heading south, parallel to the Route des Bois Blancs.
Pass under the Hertzian Tower at the Étoile du Pavé de Meudon roundabout. Cross the Route du Pavé de Meudon opposite a building.

No signposting

A few metres past the road, leave the signposted path by taking the first track on the right, heading east-northeast; the path is initially flat then descends parallel to the Route du Pavé de Meudon.

(5) When you reach a sunken path, take it to the left heading south-west. At the bottom, turn left onto the small path running parallel to the Route de Morte Bouteille (tarmac).
At the end of the path, cross over to take the footpath on the right-hand side, running alongside the Étang de l’Ursine. Pass in front of the restaurant La Pergola, and the signs for “Vélizy-Villacoublay” and “Chaville”. At the end of the path, continue along the road.

At the Carrefour de la Tour, signposted “Route Forestière des Fonds de la Chapelle”, go round the barrier on the right to take the uphill path (marked with horse-shoe symbols) running parallel to this forest road. 200 m further on, at plot 76, take a wide, level path on the right.

(6) Well before reaching a bend, take a path that branches off to the left on level ground and gradually becomes steeper as it climbs. Join the Route des Fonds de la Chapelle where it turns left at a right angle. Follow it to the Carrefour des Fonds de la Chapelle.

Yellow-red markings.

(7) At the junction, head diagonally right, due east, at an obtuse angle: take a wide path marked Yellow-Red(GRP®). Sign for “Ceinture verte de l’Île-de-France, direction Carrefour de l’Anémomètre”. Cross two drainage channels (ditches used to collect water and carry it to the ponds).

Cross the motorway via the footbridge. Continue straight on after the footbridge, along the Dutronchet forest road. Go round a secondary school and an equestrian centre. Take the signposted path that descends to the right into the forest. It joins a junction with a tarmac road closed to cars. Keeping to the right, continue down the path following the markings until you reach a stone footbridge and the Étang de Meudon. At the footbridge, turn right to walk round the pond on the right-hand side until you reach the restaurant.

(8) At the restaurant ‘La Terrasse de l’Étang’, take the signposted path on the right, which slopes gently downwards. 400 m further on, cross a busy roundabout at the entrance to Meudon. On the left is Hangar Y, a historic airship station.

No markings or variable markings

Leave the signposted route (which continues to the right along a very busy road) and carry straight on through the car park, alongside the Étang de Chalais. Pass the refreshment bar “Au Rendez-Vous des Pêcheurs” on your left.

(9) At the Étang de Trivaux, go round the refreshment bar and immediately turn left onto a tarmac road closed to cars. Yellow signposting, plot 17. Continue to the Étang de la Garenne (sign for “Route forestière de la Fontaine au Lynx”). Take a road on the left at a right angle. Head towards the Fontaine Sainte-Marie (drinking water).

(10) Turn right and walk along the wall. From here, follow the wall, keeping it on your left. You’ll reach Route de Rushmoor, following the yellow markings.

(11) Turn left onto Ruelle Hérault. A little further down, enter the park on the right (yellow markings). Walk on level ground to a crossroads, then turn left at a right angle. Pass a fountain, leave the park via the lower exit and turn right onto Rue du Haut d’Arthelon, which joins Rue Henri Barbusse.

Opposite Meudon Val-Fleury station (RER C), turn right onto the path running alongside the railway line, towards the “Musée Rodin”.
Take the footbridge over the tracks, then opposite, head up Rue de Saint-Germain (pedestrianised). Cross Rue de Paris to take Rue de la Croix du Val.

(12) Turn right onto Rue Jean Brunet, which becomes Rue de l’Arrivée. Meudon station (line N, towards Montparnasse) is at the end of this street (E).

I don’t use GPS, just the printed version of the route description, so, like the hiker before me, I walked straight up to the other end of the cemetery. I came to a fork just as the climb began, but as there were no instructions, I carried on climbing (with the steps in sight), thinking I would then come to Rue des Guinguettes.

I found my way back on track to continue to point 2. Then, at point 3, you state: “At a fork in the middle of the forest, with no obvious landmarks, take the diagonal path...” . But there are loads of forks! And the GR doesn’t show up very often! So there too, I missed the fork and ended up on the Route du Pavé de Meudon (what’s more, I thought I was following the GR because there were some more or less faded markings from it, probably an old route). At that point, I gave up because the route is completely lacking in detail. In my opinion, it needs a complete overhaul and needs to be much more precise. I opened my mobile and found my bearings using Google Maps. I made my way to the Meudon radio tower and followed the Netra route "From the Seine to the Forest of Meudon", which passes through there and is easy to follow (I’d done it before). Sorry

A few gardening sessions (as they’d say on the Dakar Rally):
- Right from the start, the steep climb up a flight of steps took me to the other end of the cemetery on the Route des Postillons rather than to a junction leading to Rue des Guinguettes
- Before point 6, going round the barrier and following the bridle path took me between plots 77 and 78 rather than to the corner of plot 76 (perhaps it should be indicated to turn right BEFORE this barrier)

plus a real navigational error (between points 9 and 10 at the sign for the Route forestière de la Fontaine au Lynx), probably more my fault (even though I didn’t see an obvious ‘road’ on the left, I should have looked more carefully) than down to the route description, which cost me a steep extra climb and an extra kilometre or two (the whole stretch from the ‘Carré aux Pièges’).

Apart from these few hiccups, the route—which ran almost exclusively through woodland (and not necessarily along the widest paths )—was a pleasant run.
Despite the chilly weather on Saturday, there were quite a few runners and cyclists out and about all along the route.
