Eichener See and Wehrer Boden

The route is largely in open country. The paths are wide and well signposted. On the way there, we’ll walk past Eichener See to see if it’s there, as it’s a seasonal lake. Information boards along the route and inside the shelter explain how this lake works. We will then cross a small wood and the Dinkelberg hills to the south of Eichener See before reaching the village of Eichen. We will cross the Dorfbach, which flows only through Eichen, and leave the village after a short walk through its eastern part.

Description of the walk

Hikers’ car park (40 spaces) in open countryside along the B518, on the right, 1.7 km from the junction in Schopfheim towards Wehr. Please note: the entrance to the car park is not signposted!

(S/E) With your back to the road, take the Red Diamond-marked path (Westweg) on the left towards the lake (or the grassy hollow). At the signpost ‘Beim Eichener See’, continue straight on. Walk past the lake and into the forest. Ignore the paths branching off on either side. Stay on the well-marked trail. Carry on straight ahead until you reach the “Im Seehölzle” junction.

(1) Leave the Westweg and follow the Yellow Diamond sign to the right, continuing until you reach the “Wehrer Boden” signpost.

(2) Turn right onto the path marked with a Yellow Diamond and follow it to the “Kessel” signpost.

(3) Our Yellow Diamond-marked path joins the Westweg, which is marked with a Red Diamond. Turn left and follow the Westweg to the “Engelsgrund” signpost.

(4) Leave the Westweg and continue straight on along a path marked with a Yellow Diamond towards Eichen.

(5) Turn left towards the village of Eichen, following the Yellow Diamond markings until you reach the “Sonne” signpost.

(6) Turn right onto the Hotzenwald Querweg, signposted with a black and white Black Diamond on a yellow background. Cross the Dorfbach and continue to the end of the road. Join Oberdorfstrasse. Turn right. At the “Oberdorf” signpost, continue straight on, following the black and white Black Diamond on a yellow background.

(7) Leave the Black Diamond and White Diamond on a yellow background. Take the Yellow Diamond on the left to reach the “Kuhbrünnli” signpost. Caution: this section of the route is also an access road to Eichen. Keep well to the left.

(8) Take the path on the right towards Hasel, then keep left onto the footpath that runs alongside the B518 road through the forest. At the next junction, the car park comes into view: carefully cross the busy B518 road and head to the car park (S/E) slightly below.

Notes

At Eichener See there are information boards and a shelter with benches. Do take the time to stop off here. Footpaths invite you to walk around the lake (700 m).

The village of Eichen has been part of the town of Schopfheim since the early 1970s and was first mentioned in the year 807 under the name Einheim. The Dorfbach stream, approximately 2 km long, rises to the east of Eichen, flows through the village and joins the Schlierbach stream to the west of Eichen.
