Eichener See: in search of a lake that appears and disappears

The main attraction is Eichenersee. You’ll probably have to visit several times as it’s quite rare. It may appear once or twice a year, and in some years not at all. After a very rainy spell, when the groundwater rises, water seeps up through the ground and the basin fills. The place is magical. Then we’ll head up into the hills north of the Dinkelberg.

Description of the walk

A small car park in the open countryside along the B518, on the right, 1.7 km from the junction at Schopfheim towards Wehr. Please note, the car park entrance is not signposted!

(S/E) With your back to the road, take the path on the left towards the lake (or the grassy hollow). At the signpost “Beim Eichener See”, continue straight ahead. Take the path on the right which runs along the lake towards the east to reach the shelter.

(1) Take the path behind the shelter. Turn left to join the signposted path, then right. Ignore the paths branching off on either side. Stay on the well-marked signposted path. Continue straight on to the “Im Seehölzle” junction.

(2) Turn left, heading due north. Cross the road carefully ; this is the main road between Schopfheim and Bad Säckingen and is very busy. Go down about fifteen steps carved into the ground and first turn left then right.

(3) Continue straight on along the signposted path towards Kürnberg. Stay on this signposted path as it climbs, ignoring the paths on either side, until you reach a Y-junction at the “Boden” signpost. There is a large tree with a signpost.

(4) Take the left-hand branch for the return route. Follow the cycle path towards Eichen, turning left then right.

(5) Follow the cycle path. Turn left, then right twice. Reach the “Kuhbrünnli” signpost and go straight on. Head towards Eichen, go through the tunnel under the road and arrive at an inverted Y-junction.

(6) Take the path on the left at a sharp angle and head for the car park (S/E).

Between (3) and (4), as you emerge from the forest, you can see the two towers of the Hohe Möhr on the right: the 30-metre-high observation tower and the 77-metre-high technical pylon. You can also see the two wind farms at Glaserkopf and Rohrenkopf near Gersbach, the very same ones that can be seen from the Alsatian side. Further north lies the charming village of Kürnberg (part of the municipality of Schopfheim), at 507 m, ideally situated.
