Description of the walk

Car park: Jekerstraat, under the Kanne Bridge, alongside the Albert Canal.

(S/E) From the car park, take the stretch of road running alongside the canal (north-west direction) and begin the climb up the wooded slope by taking the path on the right, situated above the three large ‘steps’. The path follows the upper part of the slope whilst running alongside the canal. Follow it for 1.5 km.

(1) When you reach a three-way fork, keep strictly to the right onto the forest track and continue to the end.

(2) At the end, continue along the tarmac road, still running parallel to the canal. You will reach the bridge over the canal (bunker beneath the bridge deck, partially converted into a terrace, and just before it, the Monument to the Flame of Peace in the World).

(3) Cross the canal via the bridge and take the road immediately on the right. Then turn left twice, then right to join the farm track. Continue straight on at the next junction.

(4) Then turn right into Rue Zepperenbank. After no. 52, take the cul-de-sac on the right towards the playground (lawn) and then turn left onto the path, just before the playground. The path runs behind a few houses and then bends to the right. Afterwards, take the path on the left across the field.

(5) Once on the concrete road, first turn right then left to continue across the field. At the end, first turn right then left again to join Zeenendaalweg.

(6) 150 metres further on, as the path begins to descend and you approach a fork, take the right-hand path protected by a gate. This path runs along the top of the slope above a large pasture, before entering a wood after 170 metres. Enter the woodland, continue along the path which roughly follows the same contour line and ignore the side paths.

(7) After 750 metres, or about fifty metres after reaching a high point and following a right-angled bend, take the path on the left descending steeply towards the upper curtain wall of Neercanne Castle. Follow the curtain wall to arrive in front of the castle’s entrance gate. Turn left and take the path on the right shortly afterwards to reach the road below. Take the road on the right towards the village.

(8) After 400 metres, turn left into Rue Kleine Molenstraat. Pass the ‘Smokkel’ mill and cross the Geer via the footbridge. Continue across the field to the road (Mergelweg) and follow it to the right for about 50 metres, then turn left at the boundary marker onto the stony path. After the property, the path turns right, becomes a footpath, and runs behind the houses before soon joining Preusstraat. Turn left onto it towards Montagne Saint-Pierre.

(9) As Preusstraat approaches a bend, head straight up the path in line with the street. This leads to a footpath at the top. Take it to the right. Shortly afterwards, it curves in a wide arc. Ignore the path leading down before the bend, then take the path to the right at the junction. Follow it as it descends gently.

(10) At the next junction, take the path leading downhill (GR®5) to the right, down the slope towards the lower path (Castertweg). Continue along it to the right for 150 m.

(11) Before the first houses, take the path on the left; do not continue to the towpath, but keep right at the small buildings (this is actually the siphon allowing the Geer to pass under the canal) and follow the Geer. After 400 metres, take the small bridge on the left, then keep left onto the tarmac path leading to the bridge over the canal (stairs). Cross the bridge halfway across to reach the stairs leading to the car park (S/E).
