From Les Prés-Ronds to the Chalet de l’Aulp

A short walk suitable for families. It will take you to the Col de l’Aulp and the chalet-restaurant of the same name. A wonderful breath of fresh mountain air.

Description of the walk

Start from the car park next to the Refuge de Pré Vérel.

(S/E) Start climbing the stony path and walk past the refuge. Follow the path for about 150m past the refuge and take the path on the right, then begin your ascent along the switchbacks.
Stay on the main path; there is no chance of getting lost. Ignore the hiking trails branching off to the right and left.

(1) To reach the chalet, take the path on the right.

(2) From the chalet, return via the same route as on the way there. You will return to the car park where you started (S/E).

Waypoints

  1. S/E : km 0 - alt. 1,215 m - Prés-Ronds car park
  2. 1 : km 1.9 - alt. 1,429 m - Junction
  3. 2 : km 2.27 - alt. 1,423 m - Chalet de l'Aulp
  4. S/E : km 4.54 - alt. 1,215 m - Prés-Ronds car park

Notes

There are no water points along the route. As the route isn’t very long, you can still bring a little water with you, especially if you have children with you.
Wear sturdy shoes as the path is quite uneven and can be dangerous for your ankles.
A hat is, of course, recommended.
There is no shelter along the route; the only ones available are the chalet at the start of the Prés-Ronds trail and the chalet at the summit.

Worth a visit

During the ascent or descent, you’ll be treated to magnificent views of La Tournette, Le Charvet, Le Rocher Roux and the Coche Cabane forest.

Once you reach the Chalet de l'Aulp, continue to the viewpoint and admire the view of Annecy and its lake from over 1,000 metres above sea level.

A brilliant hike. Incredible views. Well-marked paths (yellow arrows on a green background). Be careful with the starting point, though! Google Maps on your mobile directs you to Montmin town centre if you search for ‘Refuge Pré-Verel’ because of the ‘6’ in the name. A really friendly refuge with excellent food (beef steak!). In short, an essential stop-off for exploring the surrounding area (Forclaz, Aulp). Make sure you wear good walking boots – rocky terrain and steep slopes guaranteed.

Hello
I’ve only done the route in summer, but it’s true that the views must be magnificent in winter too.
The roadblocks are to be expected, but I didn’t know about them.
Enjoy the hike.
The influx of cars is due to the restaurant up on the hill.

In the middle of winter, the road is blocked at LE BOIS, which adds a few extra kilometres... so bear that in mind. Otherwise, the scenery is stunning; snowshoes are recommended as there’s a really thick layer of snow at this time of year, but personally, I managed just fine with hiking boots and Wintertrax. The path to the chalet is very pleasant and easy to follow.

Spectacular scenery, a challenge that lives up to its reputation; unfortunately, there’s a lot of traffic.
Still worth recommending.
Thank you
