A) by train: take the route that passes opposite the SNCF station, at the roundabout and on Rue de la Gare (11).
B) by car: park opposite the castle, on the other side of the River Maine. At the end of the bridge leading from the foot of the castle, take the second exit on the right, then the first street on the right, Esplanade Jean-Claude Antonini. On this esplanade, the first exit on the left leads to the car park beneath the Le Quai theatre (paid parking); otherwise, at the end of the street, on the right, there is a free car park (Esplanade Jean-Claude Antonini).
(S/E) From the free car park, head towards the River Maine.
(1) Go down to the quay via the steps. Walk along the river on the left-hand side. Walk past the harbour and continue to the Pont de Verdun.
(2) Cross the bridge, then go through the garden on the right after the bridge. Take the wide central path, facing Saint-Maurice Cathedral, and climb the Montée-Saint-Maurice steps to the top.
(3) Cross the square and walk along the right-hand side of the cathedral. Keep to the right and walk along Place Freppel. Continue straight on along Rue Saint-Evroult. This street leads to Angers Castle. At the end of the street, turn right onto the promenade that runs alongside the castle. At the end of the promenade, enjoy a beautiful view.
(4) Turn round. Just after the entrance to the Château, turn left onto Rue Saint-Aignan. At the end of this street, turn right onto Rue Saint-Paul and, immediately afterwards, left onto Rue du Vollier. Continue straight on to take the steps leading down to the Montée Saint-Maurice. Cross over to the opposite side onto Rue du Parvis St-Maurice.
(5) Next, take the first street on the left, Rue du Chanoine Urseau, then turn left onto Rue Baudrière.
(6) Enter the Passage des Halles on the right and immediately turn left up the steps leading to Allée René Bazin. At the bottom of the steps, go round the building and cross Place de la République. Turn left onto Rue Plantagenêt. At the end of the street, walk along the right-hand side of Place Molière.
(7) At the end of the square, turn right into Rue de la Roë, then take the first street on the left, Rue de la Parcheminerie, and the first on the right, Rue Valdemaine. At the end, cross the small square to the left, then continue straight on along Rue des Poëliers. At the end of the street, turn right, then left into Place du Pilori, then take the first right into Rue Pocquet de Livonnières. Walk past the Church of Notre-Dame des Victoires, then carry on straight ahead until you reach Rue Jules Guitton on your right.
(8) Turn right onto Place Pierre Mendès France, then take the second left, which runs alongside Place Général Leclerc. Cross the square to join Avenue du 11 Novembre on the left. After the roundabout, take the first right onto Avenue Jeanne d’Arc.
(9) Opposite Allée du Square Jeanne d’Arc, turn right into the Jardin du Mail. Cross the garden, then turn right onto Boulevard du Maréchal Foch and take the pedestrian crossing opposite Angers Town Hall. Follow the pavement opposite to the left, walk alongside the town hall buildings, climb the steps to reach the terrace, continue to the left alongside the building and exit via the small passageway, Impasse de la Mairie. Continue straight ahead along Rue Grandet. Turn right onto Rue d’Alsace. Continue to Place du Ralliement.
(10) Walk round the square, passing in front of the Grand Théâtre. Walk up the square and exit at the top, turning right onto Rue Saint-Denis. Continue along Rue Franklin Roosevelt, which passes in front of the Post Office. Then take the first left, then the next right, then left onto Rue Saint-Aubin. Turn right onto Boulevard du Maréchal Foch. Carry on straight ahead along Rue du Haras, then Avenue Denis Papin, until you reach Place de la Gare.
(11) Turn right onto Rue de la Gare, then at the roundabout at Place de la Visitation, take the second street, Rue Talot. Carry on straight ahead onto Rue des Lices. Just before the Tour Saint-Aubin, turn left. Cross Place du Musée and carry on along Rue du Musée, then turn right onto Rue Toussaint.
(12) Cross Place Sainte-Croix and continue straight ahead onto Rue Montault. Turn left onto Rue de l’Oisellerie, then right onto Place du Mondain Chanlouineau. Go straight on until you reach Rue de la Roë.
(13) Turn left and continue to the end of the street, until you reach Place Molière, which you passed on the way there.
(7) Turn left and cross the Pont des Arts et Métiers on the right-hand side. Continue straight on after the bridge. Turn left onto Boulevard Henry Arnauld. Continue along this boulevard until you reach the car park at the start (S/E).
