Discover Parfondeval and its surroundings

This rural commune, one of the "most beautiful villages in France", a few kilometres from the Belgian border, in a setting typical of the region, consists of a homogeneous habitat made of red bricks and grey slate roofs, which give it a certain character. Its small Protestant temple and, above all, its superb fortified Saint-Médard Church, dating back to the Middle Ages, are its most representative buildings. They make you want to stop off here on your way tothe Ardennes, Reims or the Picardy coast, which are not far away.

Description of the walk

Park on Rue du Chêne, near the Relais de la Chouette (free).

(S/E) With your back to the church, head west on Rue de la Place. After 100 metres, you will reach Rue Principale. Turn right towards Dohis (signposted). Go down the street and, at the next crossroads, continue straight on Rue du Moulin until you reach Rue du Chêne.

(1) Continue along this street (GR® 122), walk past the cemetery and, at the next intersection, turn left. Cross a stream (wooden guardrail), then climb a stone path for about 950 m (steep slope between 7 and 10%) to reach a road.

(2) Turn left to reach the hamlet of Louvet. Continue for 150 m until you reach a T-junction.

(3) Take the right-hand lane, ignore the first path on the left and continue until you reach the Chemin Rural de Brunehamel à Montcornet, on the right-hand side of the road.

(4) Leave the GR® 122 and turn right (there is a cross a few metres further on) onto this path. Continue north-east until you reach a crossroads.

(5) Descend to the left towards the village of Brunehamel. Cross the River Serre via Rue de la Fontaine Fleurie, ignoring Rue de la Grande Porte, Rue Neuve and Ruelle d'Agneau on the left, and Rue du Bas on the right, before arriving at Place de Mai 1940, the village's central square.

(6) Continue straight ahead for about 50 metres, then turn right, pass in front of the town hall, ignore the two car park entrances on the right, and immediately turn right onto a driveway that passes in front of the war memorial. At the end of the lane, turn left, cross Rue Principale (RD977) with caution and continue straight ahead into Rue du Stade (towards Les Autels). Turn right into the first street, Rue de la Pension.

(7) At the bottom of this street, opposite the cemetery, turn right onto Rue de l'Église, then immediately left, pass in front of Saint-Nicolas Church, and turn left onto Rue des Bouleaux. Continue straight ahead on this street for about 80 metres, then turn right onto Chemin Rural des Ouies. Cross the Rivière la Brune and continue to the junction with the RD560.

(8) Continue straight ahead on this road, ignore Rue des Grandes Ouies on your left, walk along the Bois de France Bertin and reach the Chemin Rural de Résigny aux Petits Ouies.

(9) Turn right and continue to the D977.

(10) Turn left and continue carefully along the shoulder of this departmental road.

(11) After 600 m, cross the road with caution and turn right onto Chemin Rural des Petits Ouies to return to Parfondeval via Rue Basse.

(12) Continue straight ahead, passing Rue du Temple on your right and turning left onto Rue de la Fossette. After 200 metres, turn left onto Rue du Chêne, where you will find a car park (S/E).
