Description of the walk

The start is at Saint-Rémi Church, where you can park. There is a railway line in the village, but unfortunately no station.

(S/E) Follow Rue du Château eastwards, then turn left into Rue de la Gironde. Turn left onto Chemin de la Vallée and you’ll come to a fork.

(1) Keep to the right. The tarmac road passes by the cemetery and climbs gently up to a water tank and a crossroads.

(2) Turn right onto the path which leads you through a small wood and then to the hamlet of Laval d’Estrebay, passing under a high-voltage power line.

(3) At Rue Principale, turn left and cross the bridge. Turn right at the first fork, then left at the next one to leave the hamlet via the north-west. Follow the small road, then the unpaved track towards the wind turbines to reach the junction with a track running directly beneath a high-voltage power line.

(4) Turn left towards the valley and head back to the hamlet.

(5) Do not cross the bridge but take the road on the right that runs alongside the stream.

(6) In front of the last house, at a place called La Huchette, take the path on the left towards the bridge. After crossing the stream, follow the path slightly to the right which climbs the hill towards the woods. Cross the hill and return to the junction at the start.

(1) Turn right to reach Rue de la Gironde. Follow it to the right for about twenty metres, then cut across to the right to reach the church and the car park (S/E).

Worth a visit

The Church of Saint-Rémi in Aouste is a fortified church dating from the 15th to the 17th century.
Laval d'Estrebay is a small rural hamlet with houses typical of the region.
Rumigny, 4 km away, also has a fortified church and a castle which is (sometimes) open to the public.

An interesting route, particularly in terms of the variety of landscapes.

The final section from the valley back to Aouste could do with a good clear-out, as the final climb along the edge of the woods

is quite challenging as it’s not very clear

Best regards, dups08
