Discover the Chapel of Las Planques

A shortened circular route to explore the Chapel of Las Planques, nestled in the woods. Although short, this route requires some effort to tackle the numerous ascents and descents that follow one another in succession.

Description of the walk

A few parking spaces along the D888, about 250 m past the old Tanus Bridge, coming from Tanus.

PR®yellowmarkings

(S/E) Head back towards the Tanus Bridge. Ignore the climb on the right, marked in yellow. 50 m further on, the path begins on the right, between the houses on Impasse du Barrage: ignore the Yellow Saltire.

(1) Turn into Impasse du Barrage. At the first Y-junction, take the path up to the right and continue to a second Y-junction.

(2) Continue to the left and head towards the Viaur. Walk alongside it, enjoying the peaceful presence of the water. Further on, take a footbridge over the Ruisseau de Ribassès, then climb towards the Travers du Viaur. This is followed by a gentle descent and another climb, until you reach the red-and-yellow markings.

(3) At this junction of the PR® and GRP® trails, continue straight ahead. At the next junction, take the sharp left-hand bend and descend towards the Claude Rivenq footbridge.

(4) Cross the footbridge to rejoin the path on the left bank. Turn right at the first junction and climb the winding path to the rear of the chapel for a view of the Viaur. Another viewpoint is accessible near the ruins on the right, next to the picnic tables. Retrace your steps slightly and head straight on towards the entrance to Las Planques.

(5) Final viewpoint over the Viaur, at the front of the chapel. Set off again through the wooden gate opposite the entrance, down to the left. Descend the steps towards the crossroads with the large stone cross.

(6) In front of the cross, take the path on the left, towards Tanus. Walk gently uphill, following the double markings.

(7) Cross the Rieu Caut, then continue without paying attention to the paths crossing on the right.

(8) End of the dual signposting. Continue straight ahead on the path leading to the small bridge over the Viaur tributary, and cross it.

No Markings

(9) Leave the Vieux Tanus path (marked yellow) by turning left onto the stony track that descends to the D888 and the Tanus Bridge. Head left to cross the bridge.

(1) Continue along the road to return to the starting point, which is 250 m away (S/E).

It’s a lovely route, but not an easy one.
You need strong leg muscles to tackle the two climbs.
A superb spot, with a picnic area next to the Chapelle des Planqués
