From Visp to Raron, overlooking the Rhône Valley

A route following part of the ‘Sun Trail’ on the southern face of the Bernese Alps, offering panoramic views over the Rhône Valley. The hike takes in typical Valais villages with a rich architectural heritage, such as Eggerberg, Ausserberg, St. German and Raron. In several places, the route runs alongside the railway line between Brig and Bern via the Lötschberg Tunnel, offering an opportunity to appreciate the technical feats involved in its construction at the start of the20th century. Due to its south-facing aspect and relatively low altitude, this hike is best enjoyed in spring or autumn.

Description of the walk

Access by public transport

Visp SBB station.

Return journey from Raron SBB station.

Access by car

Free parking spaces are limited and not in the immediate vicinity of Visp railway station. Please use public transport.

(S) Exit on the north side of the station. Follow the yellow markings and the signs for Eggerberg on the yellow signposts. On leaving the station, take the street on the left. Shortly after a right-angle bend, take the first street on the left and follow it to a junction. Turn left into Birkenweg. The road then curves and runs alongside the railway line. Here, on the left, you’ll find a footpath and cycle path running alongside the Vispa. Follow this path to a roundabout. Take the second exit, slightly to the left, to cross the Rhône. At the next roundabout, continue along the second street on the left (Hauptstrasse). Pass the first street on the right and take the second (Eggerbergerstrasse). You will very quickly reach a yellow signpost.

(1) Turn right onto Kummenweg towards Eggerberg/Finnen. Follow the yellow markings uphill to Eggerberg church.

(2) Go past the church at the top, following the Kirchweg until you reach Bahnhofstrasse, which you take to the left. You’ll soon come to another road; take this to the left for about 150 m before turning onto the next track to the right. The track goes through a short tunnel and offers lovely views over the Rhône valley.

(3) Continue straight on along the track. Pass under the Lötschberg railway viaduct. To cross the Baltschiederbach, you’ll need to use several structures: two tunnels and a footbridge.

(4) Take the path climbing up to the right towards Ausserberg/Hohtenn. Follow and then cross a small bisse, the name given to the irrigation channels in the remote valleys of Valais.

(5) Continue left towards Ausserberg/Hohtenn.

(6) Take the path on the right, which winds sharply, following the signs for Ausserberg/Hohtenn/Undra Suon. The path winds its way up a fairly steep slope to reach the Undra (lower bisse).

(7) Continue left towards Ausserberg/Hohtenn and follow the Undra. At this point on the route, we are on the edge of the Jungfrau-Aletsch area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site (informative sign). Continue along Undrastrasse, heading west, until you reach Eggastrasse:lovely view of Ausserberg.

(8) Continue along Undrastrasse, which passes through Fischerbiel, to reach the junction with Dorfstrasse in Ausserberg.

(9) Continue straight ahead and, a few metres further on, take the first street on the left (Trogdorfstrasse) to emerge opposite the church:take a moment to admire the typical Valais cemetery in front of the church.

(10) Follow the road alongside the church (Dorfstrasse), then, as you come out of a bend, turn right onto Bitschibielstrasse. When you reach a junction, turn left to head down to Ausserberg railway station.

(11) Cross the tracks via the underpass. Cross Haupstrasse and continue straight ahead. At the junction with Chalchofostrasse, turn left onto this road and continue to Chalchofu Kapelle.

(12) Continue along the path to Sankt German, which you reach via Nordstrasse, continuing along Wolfji and then Dorfstrasse. Reach the church.

(13) Continue through Sankt German, following Dorfstrasse to the end of the bend.

(14) Turn left (Kulturweg) and continue to the junction with the road leading to the castle church in Raron.

(15) Take the time to visit the castle church by taking the road on the left.

(16) Turn back.

(15) Head down to the left towards Raron.

(17) Take the path on the left, then at the next junction, follow the road on the left towards St. Michel’s Church.

(18) Take the street opposite the church square. At the junction, turn right and, a few metres further on, turn left. Follow the street until it joins Bahnhofstrasse, which you take to the left. Continue straight on and cross the bridge over the Rhône to reach Raron SBB station (E).

For further information on trail markings in Switzerland, see the “Hiking trail categories” on the Swiss Hiking website: https://www.suisse-rando.ch/fr/savoir/signalisation/categories-de-chemins-de-randonnee.

If you wish to check train and bus timetables, use the “SBB Mobile” app on your phone rather than the SBB website. The “Mobile CFF” app also includes “EasyRide”, which allows you to buy a ticket online and automatically calculates the cost from your starting point to your destination. You may also wish to consider the “Fairtiq” app, which offers the same service regardless of the public transport used – train, PostBus, urban transport or even ski lifts – whether used individually or in combination.

Visit the rock-cut church of St. Michel. This more modern church was built entirely into the rock.
