From Verlieux in the municipality of Peyraud to the hamlets of Bogy

Stunning views over the Rhône valley, but also inland towards the remarkable valleys and plateaus.
This is a unique route as it has very little elevation gain in this part of the Ardèche, alternating between fields and woods several times. It can also be shortened to 7.6 km for afternoon hikers in winter.
To all walkers: please feel free to post photos, specifying the location on the route.

WARNING! A hiker has warned me to take great care, following heavy rain, as the section along the stream is very difficult.
I advise hikers to wait four or five days after the rain before undertaking this hike.

Description of the walk

Start from the Verlieux Centre in the commune of Peyraud; park right next to the little church.

(S/E) Head south towards the centre of the small village; after a right-hand bend, head south again to leave the village. Head down towards the bottom of the valley via several hairpin bends. The path has likely been washed out by the rain and is quite steep. Ignore thefirst path branching off to the left. Cross the stream and head back up the main path. It emerges from the forest to reach a crossroads on the plateau, surrounded by a few fields.

(1) Ignore the path branching off to the left towards the back, heading towards an electricity pylon. Continue straight on towards the south-west until you reach the entrance to the village of Bogy.

(2) Do not take the path branching off to the right, unless you are taking the short version of the walk – see Practical Information. Continue towards the centre; at the crossroads, turn right and ignore the other two streets. Continue along Rue des 2 Églises towards the west. Pass the small fire station. Continue along Rue du Lavoir (the wash house no longer exists). At the junction leading out of the village, turn left onto the Chemin du Knoll de la Garde. Continue straight ahead, passing the pumping station; do not turn right but continue straight on. Head down into the small wood to cross the Ruisseau de Bras

(3) Continue across the fields. The path heads west, then turns right at the crossroads, towards the hamlet of Artruc, due north.

(4) At the crossroads in the hamlet, take the Chemin des Paturas straight ahead. Continue straight on. At the crossroads at the hamlet of Picot, turn right onto the Route de La Fromentale and leave it after about 300 m; see practical information.

(5) Continue straight on and walk past a property. Turn right across the fields for about 350 m. (There is sometimes an electric fence; lift it with a stick to avoid getting an electric shock) and turn left. The path enters the forest at the corner (unfortunately, there is a tree trunk blocking the narrow path); cross the Ruisseau de Bras twice within a few metres as trees have fallen (December 2019 storm).

(6) Just after the stream, head up to the left (Chemin de Bogy); at the junction at the hamlet of La Fromentale, continue on to reach the road. Turn right for about twenty metres until you reach the crossroads.

(7) Leave the road slightly to the right to go round the hamlet via Chemin des Grandes Bruyères. Take the path down to the right which starts where the tarmac road ends (an alternative: stay on the road to avoid the hamlet).
Continue along the Chemin de Grande Bruyère, pass the edge of the forest to enter it and cross the Ruisseau de Crémieux. Continue past the buildings and houses and ignore the path branching off to the right. You will reach the junction with the Route de Peaugres or Route de Verlieux.

(8) Cross it, continue along the path opposite, then take thefirst path on the right; at the junction, turn right again (if you have missed thefirst path, thesecond one leads back to the same junction). The path passes a group of houses and arrives at a junction in the hamlet of Les Trouillards.

(9) Continue straight on (Chemin de la Litté); after the wide left-hand bend, continue northwards, keep to the left and then follow the edge of the woods to the right until you enter the woods. Further on, you’ll reach a Y-junction (Chemin des Bulgares).

(10) Continue straight ahead; at the next junction, turn right, ignoring the small path opposite that leads into the fields. The path heads south; at the junction with the Route de Peaugres, cross over to reach the small church (S/E).

Notes

At (2), turn right onto Chemin des Pras, continue straight on and at the junction turn right then left towards the sewage treatment plant. Just before it, turn right and head down towards the Ruisseau de Bras to reach (6).
Alternatively, at (5), continue along Route de la Fromentale and join the (7).

To all the hikers who follow my routes, you can post photos indicating the location on the route.

Worth a visit

Before and after (10), there are stunning views of the Rhône Valley.

Please note that there is a difficult section before descending to the river... The path is no longer visible, as it is overgrown with brambles.

The path through the forest devastated by the 2019 tornado in – could it really be that old? I don’t think so! It’s more than a bit tricky, especially when the stream is full of water following the recent heavy rains. The forest isn’t maintained at all and the path is becoming very dangerous! Be careful who you take with you.

Well, lovely paths and views. The only slight problem is finding a place to park near the chapel

A very interesting walk with some lovely views.
After point 5 near La Bruyère: At the edge of the meadow, entering the forest is no longer straightforward as there is barbed wire in front, so we had to veer slightly to the right and climb over the fence. Forestry work has completely obliterated the start of the path leading to a steep and very slippery descent down to the stream.
