From valleys to hills in Saint-Aignan-sur-Ry

Very small roads and paths through the plains and, more rarely, through the woods, allow you to discover this splendid part of the Norman Vexin.
Villages with pretty churches, preserved rural dwellings and unspoilt countryside guide this hike.
The valleys of the two rivers, Le Héron and L'Héronchelles, surrounded by magnificent hills, offer splendid panoramic views.
Horizons stretching as far as the eye can see open up repeatedly during this hike.

Description of the walk

Parking between the town hall and the church of Saint-Aignan-Sur-Ry, Rue de l'Église.

(S/E) With your back to the town hall, turn right and walk past the school. Continue straight ahead until you reach the bend in the road.

(1) Turn right onto Route du Vannier, which continues as a path. Pass Le Clos Des Granges on your right and continue along this grassy path between the fields until you reach a road. Cross it and continue across the fields. You will reach another road (D87).

(2) Follow it to the right until you reach the church in Boissay and go around it on the left. Opposite the dovecote, turn right and then, after the town hall, turn left towards Buchay (D93). Leave this street at thefirst intersection.

(3) Turn right towards C2 Mesnil-Jean, then pass a house and farm with a very long thuja hedge on your left. Follow this small road until you reach a crossroads of dirt tracks. Take the one on the right, opposite the sign prohibiting motor vehicles, and continue until you reach a road (D261).

(4) First turn right then left to take a grassy path through the plains, bordered by a hedge of shrubs. You will reach a road and see the remains of a white stone cross on the right under a large tree. Turn left and continue to the corner of a house.

(5) Leave the road and take the path on the left that runs alongside a hedge on your right, then continue without reaching the next road.

(6) Descend to the right onto the path between two fences bordering the pastures. The hilly landscape comes into view. Reach a road (D87), turn left and then follow thefirst intersection on the right towards Héronchelles D261. Below, the Héronchelles river flows. Enjoy the view and reach a crossroads.

(7) Cross the RD46, go over the bridge over the Héronchelles River, then pass the castle on your left and follow the road through the woods that border it. Reach an intersection without crossing the high-voltage line.

(8) Turn right at the signs for "Domaine Des Vallées et Mémorial Des Diables Noirs". You will come to a memorial to the victims of the AFN (French North Africa) war, then continue along the street into the woods. It continues as a small carriage road at the riding school. Continue and, at the edge of the woods, enjoy the rolling countryside. When you reach thefirst houses, continue along a grassy path that descends through the fields.
When you reach a crossroads, ignore theGR®® trail that branches off to the right.

(9) Turn left and continue uphill into the copse. Cross the road and take Chemin De La Bucaille to the corner of a house with a sign saying "menuiserie" (carpentry).

(10) Turn right onto a grassy path between two hedges. Walk alongside a wood and then, at the cross, follow the road downhill to the right. Continue to the bend and walk to Rebets church and back, admiring its limestone bell tower, then return to the road.

(11) Turn left at the no entry signs. Go downhill and cross the departmental road towards Boissay (D87). Cross the bridge over the River Le Héron and immediately leave the road without following the bend.

(12) Turn left, pass between two houses and find the path opposite. Climb it, following Le Héron on your left. Reach a road, cross it and you will see a telecommunications mast. Head towards a four-way crossroads.

(13) Follow the path on the right towards the pylon, pass it on your left and walk along a field. Go down into the woods, follow the bend to the right and you will reach a road.

(14) Climb the path opposite, which joins a street. Cross it and take a footpath with houses on your right. You will come to another street.

(15) Take it to the right, then turn left at the Rue de l'Église crossroads and return to the starting point (S/E).

A beautiful hike offering stunning views of this valley, with no difficulty in following the route.

Varied landscapes, hike done under a blazing sun, fortunately there are a few shaded passages here and there

I highly recommend it.

A very pleasant hike in spring, but best avoided in hot weather as the start and end of the route are through fields with no shade. We enjoyed the picnic table below Rebets church. Some sections are shared with the "La Croix du Thil" route, but don't be misled at the start of the walk, on leaving Saint-Aignan-Sur-Ry (go right, not left as indicated by the signposts).

A beautiful hike with magnificent panoramic views and a very bucolic landscape! Beautiful churches, beautiful buildings and pretty villages that have preserved their rural character dot the route, not to mention the two rivers, Le Héron and L'Héronchelles, which meander through the valleys. Best enjoyed in the sunshine, like on this beautiful spring day!
