In the Crevon Valley, starting from Martainville Castle

A pleasant, easy route along small roads and country lanes. The rolling landscape of the Crevon unfolds as you reach the charming village of Ry, which owes its fame to Flaubert.

The start and finish point, deliberately set at the castle car park, offers the chance to enhance the walk with a stroll around the castle grounds to discover the gardens, the well, the bread oven, the dovecote, the shed housing the old tools, and so on...

Description of the walk

Park in the car park in front of the entrance to Martainville Castle.

(S/E) With your back to the château, turn right onto the RN31. Continue to the junction with the RD13b road towards Grainville-sur-Ry.

(1) Follow it to the left, pass a small car park on your left and continue to the next junction.

(2) Turn right; the road quickly becomes a dirt track. Continue until you reach a crossroads. Ignore the signpostedGR® opposite.

(3) Follow the Route de Flamanville to the left at the signpost. Pass a junction then
carry on to the next fork. Turn left and you’ll reach a roundabout.

(4) Head left towards Servaville, pass the town hall on your right, then turn right onto a small path along the hedge to enter a green space with small wooden bridges, ponds and picnic tables. Head towards the church, exit onto the street of the same name and follow it to the right.

(5) Turn right at the foot of the church, then right again opposite the church to reach a crossroads. Head straight on along Rue Des Prairies, continue along the dirt track and reach the woods. Follow the path until you come to a small road.

(6) Follow it to the right, between its charming valleys and the Crevon stream winding below.
You’ll reach a small patch of greenery on your left. Look out for a path starting on the left at the bend in the road.

(7) Leave the road and take the path running alongside the field fence on the left, then follow the boundary of the meadow on the right. Pass a house on the right and continue along this path; you’ll come to an antenna on the left, then head downhill to reach the cemetery on the left. Follow the bend in the road to the right to approach Ry Church.

(8) Turn left onto a small grassy path. Walk past the houses on the right and join the Route de Blainville.

(9) Follow it to the right, then turn left at the junction with the Grand'Rue. Follow this road to the tourist office.

(10) Enter the car park to find the path along the banks of the River Crevon. Follow it on your left, then take the small path on the right alongside the stadium. Join a narrow lane, follow it to the right, then immediately turn left onto the Chemin Vert and reach a road (Rue de Perrot).

(11) Turn right, then take the path on the left and admire the historic buildings. Walk past the car park and the shops, then emerge onto Grand’Rue. Follow it to the left, then turn right onto Rue de l’Église, pass the market hall on your left and go up the path on the right to admire the splendid carved oak porch of the church. Return to the road.

(12) Follow it to the right, then, at the bend, look out for the signposted path on the left.

(13) Take this path, then turn right into the woods. Continue to the Y-junction, take the right-hand path and you will soon reach a road. Follow it to the left, then at the next junction, turn left at the sign for Flamanville. Go up this small road, past the houses, to reach the junction you passed on the way out.

(3) Turn left, pass the industrial estate and continue straight ahead at the crossroads, towards Rainfreville. Follow this small road until you reach the junction with the RN31.

(14) Cross it carefully, then continue straight ahead along the dirt track. You will reach a side track marked by a wooden post. Follow it to the right until you reach the bottom of the descent at the crossroads.

(15) Turn right onto this track, which becomes a small road. Follow it to the roundabout.

(16) Turn left onto the RN31 until you reach the original junction.

(1) Continue along this same road to the car park at the entrance to Martainville Castle (S/E)

A lovely, interesting walk with varied scenery, the beautiful Crevon Valley, a visit to the village of Ry, a picnic by the water and, of course, the beautiful Martainville Castle.
We didn’t do the last part of the route through the plains or visit the château due to a lack of time.

A very pleasant walk, but be careful of the heat on very sunny days as there isn't much shade. Make sure you bring something to drink.
A pleasant discovery of the village of Ry.

A lovely route taking in the beautiful village of Ry and the Crevon Valley.
The only downside is that there’s a lot of tarmac.

An interesting route offering the chance to explore the lovely village of Ry, the stunning Crevon Valley and Martainville Castle; the only downside is the final section of the route, which is along a road through flat countryside and lacks much interest
