From Uesslingen-Buch to Amlikon-Bissegg

Stage 18 From Les Rousses to Lake Constance via the Jura ridges. This stage, starting from Uesslingen, first takes you through peaceful agricultural pastures before skirting the vineyards of an old monastery. You then reach Warth, home to the Ittingen Charterhouse, which bears witness to more than 850 years of history and spirituality. Passing through Frauenfeld, the capital of the canton of Thurgau, you leave the hustle and bustle of the city behind and return to the tranquillity of the banks of the Thur. The route takes you to Pfyn, then offers a beautiful immersion along the river, punctuated by the passage of the superb Eschikofen customs bridge. A stage combining heritage, nature and the gentle flow of the river.

Description of the walk

Markings: signposts with sticker no. 24 on a green background (Thurweg). Yellow directional signs with a pedestrian

(S) From your bivouac site, head towards the bridge, then turn left (north-east) following the yellow directional signs with a pedestrian symbol. You will arrive at a crossroads in front of the Agvalente company.

(1) Turn right (east) onto the small tarmac road, then turn left at the end of this road. You will come to an intersection with a bench in front of a solitary tree.

(2) Continue to the right (east), then turn left at the signpost. Follow the small road that climbs slightly to the intersection.

(3) Continue straight ahead on the grassy path, following the signs, until you reach Uesslingerstrasse at the entrance to the village of Warth.

(4) Turn right onto Uesslingerstrasse, pass the gate of the former Ittingen Charterhouse (a place steeped in 850 years of history, now converted into a hotel), and continue eastwards, past the estate's hop fields, until you reach the sign attached to a lamppost at the intersection.

(5) Turn right onto the small road, which is closed to motor vehicles and slopes slightly downhill. At the fork, take the left-hand path that runs south-east across the fields. At the left-hand bend, leave this path and continue straight ahead on a winding path leading to the edge of the Thur. Follow the river on your right to the Frauenfeld-Ittingen Bridge.

(6) Carefully cross Weststrasse to take the bridge on the left-hand pavement (as there is no pavement on the right), then turn left after the bridge railing, following the direction of Frauenfeld. Pass a footbridge, follow the pile of stone gathered from fields stream south-east and pass under the bridge before reaching the signpost on Militärstrasse.

(7) Turn left towards Pfyn, crossing the stream, then quickly turn left towards the north-east. (Please note that you are crossing a military training ground where vehicles may be manoeuvring.) After the car park, follow the signs, first turn left then right to continue on a tarmac path leading north-east. Continue to the shooting ranges.

(8) Continue north to the junction of the Allmend Frauenfeld nature reserve.

(9) Head north-west and then, at the intersection, turn right onto a path running parallel to the River Thur.

(10) Follow the river on your left along this wide gravel path, pass the Ochsenfurt bridge and continue to the information board for the Allmend Frauenfeld nature reserve.

(11) Continue along this path until you reach the signpost on Hauptstrasse, just before the Felben-Pfyn Bridge.

(12) Turn left towards Pfyn and cross the Thur for the first time. Once you are on the other side of the bridge (you can stock up on supplies at a supermarket in Pfyn), carefully cross the Hauptstrasse. Then follow the signpost towards Grüneck/Hasli and walk along the Thur on your right and the Brunewasser stream on your left. Continue until you pass a small shed by the side of the road, then continue until you reach a signpost.

(13) Turn right to get closer to the river, then continue along the bank in a north-easterly direction. In a left-hand bend, the path moves away from the river before reaching a three-way junction.

(14) Turn right towards the south-west and continue to the signpost at the intersection of the paths.

(15) Turn right to get closer to the river, pass under the A7 motorway bridge and, after a left-hand bend under a high-voltage power line, continue to a fork.

(16) Turn right onto the path heading south-east and continue past the Hasli retention basin (this basin, covering approximately 40 hectares, helps regulate water and protects against extreme flooding) until you reach a railway bridge (174 metres long, dating from 1907).

(17) Pass under this bridge, turn left onto the path that climbs towards the bridge, then walk along the right-hand side of the bridge on the footpath to cross the river again. Continue to the fork at the south-western end of the bridge.

(18) Turn left twice to reach the bank of the Thur and follow it on your left towards the south-east. Follow this grassy path which, in a right-hand bend, leads you to the Hauptstrasse.

(19) Cross the Hauptstrasse with caution, then turn left onto the cycle path. Continue east-southeast until you reach the sign indicating the end of the cycle path. Then turn right onto Flugplatzstrasse, following the signs for Zirkus Stey, and you will arrive at Cirque Stey, in a place called Zollhus.

(20) Keep left (north-east) to cross the Eschikofen customs bridge, passing through the covered wooden section over the Thur river, then the steel section before arriving on the other side, between two old oak trees.

(21) Follow the cycle path to the right, then quickly turn right at the fork and right again at the intersection to reach the river. Follow it on your right towards the south-east. Pass under a high-voltage power line and continue along the Thur to the intersection opposite an airfield on the other bank.

(22) Continue until you reach the signpost at the crossroads at elevation 417.

(23) Stay along the Thur until you reach a car park (E), where you will find a barbecue area and a secluded spot for your bivouac.
