From Taillebourg to Annepont via the Chemin des Escarbilles

This route is characterised by the diversity of the landscapes encountered: a wooded section crossed by a wide path following an old railway line, a hilly landscape with patches of vineyards, and finally a dry hillside overlooking a wetland.

Description of the walk

Start: Place du Marché, near the town hall where there is a car park.

(S/E) Before setting off on the walk, take the time to walk up the Allée du Château to cross the park, see the keep (the last remaining part of the castle), and head to the castle terrace overlooking the Charente.

(1) Turn around and return to the car park.

(S/E) On your return, at Place du Marché, head down to the left along Rue Aliènor d’Aquitaine. 400 m further down, before the railway line, turn right onto Route de Saint-Savinien (D114) and follow it until you find a signposted path on the left that takes you across the Ruisseau de la Rutelière. Then rejoin the D114.

(2) A few metres further on, take thefirst road on the right, Rue du Plantis. Continue straight on along the old railway line until you reach a crossroads.

(3) Continue straight ahead along Chemin des Escarbilles. Cross the Pont des Maçons, leave the forest and turn left then right to find the underpass beneath the motorway.

(4) Continue straight on along the D124 and take thesecond road on the right. After a slight climb, this road leads to some vineyards.

(5) Cross the D127 and continue along a path through the vineyards. Carry on straight ahead, then cross a wood and, at the exit (elevation 55m, IGN map), you will reach a fork.

(6) Leave this track by taking the second track on the right, which heads towards Le Maine Moreau, which you will go round on the right.

(7) At Maine Moreau, take a small tarmac road which continues along a dirt track to the hamlet of Les Blanchardières.

(8) Continue along the road that follows the right bank of the Ruisseau de la Blanchardière and head towards Annepont.

(9) Opposite the church, turn left onto Rue de la Rutelière (D127) for a few metres, then take thefirst right onto Chemin de la Sicauderie. After passing the cemetery on your right, take the next path on the left. Cross an area of farmland and market gardens, pass the hamlet of Vivrot on your left and continue under the motorway. Turn left towards the Grand Moulin.

(10) Now follow a tarmac road, then leave it to take a path on the right which leads to Taillebourg cemetery.

(11) At the crossroads by the cemetery, rejoin Rue Aliènor d'Aquitaine and follow it to reach the Market Square (S/E).

I find that, overall, there’s a bit too much tarmac on the routes; more woodland paths would be nicer... Corsica

A superb walk with very little elevation gain. I did it at the end of August; it was sunny and warm, but fortunately there are plenty of wooded sections along the route, particularly the Chemin des Escarbilles, which runs entirely through the woods. The Chemin des Escarbilles is the highlight of this walk: absolutely lovely!
Well worth doing even with children, with a little picnic halfway through if needed!...

A superb nature walk with varied, rolling countryside. A special mention for the first section, which follows the old railway line for quite a distance!
We decided to visit the castle at the end of the walk.

Hello everyone,
Once again, thank you for this lovely walk. With just the map, there were no problems on this route, apart from perhaps at the end near the mills (the last kilometre) when trying to find the path back to Taillebourg.
Otherwise, nothing to complain about – a 15 km route that’s practically flat, varied and very pleasant, with a lovely surprise in the form of the castle at the finish.
