Description of the walk

Start from the car park between the school and the sports ground.

(S/E) Join the road that runs through the village (D114), cross at the pedestrian crossing and turn left. Walk along the pavement, past the mini-market.

(1) Take the second street on the right, Chemin des Chaumes, and continue. At the first junction, at the Stop sign, go straight on along Chemin de la Fontaine, which descends towards the hamlet of Les Guilloteaux.

(2) Turn right and, 100 m further on, at the fork, turn left, staying on the tarmac. At the junction of the two tarmac paths, continue straight on for about 1.5 km, then take a stony path on the left just before a copse. You will arrive at the hamlet of Choisy.

(3) Cross the tarmac road. On the right, you can see the tower of an old windmill. Continue straight on along a well-marked path alongside a wall which is not, however, shown on the IGN map. Head down towards the D114 road. Walk 50 m along the roadside, cross the Rochefollet via a bridge and continue to the sign for “Saint-Vaize”.

(4) Turn right onto a wide path under the trees that runs alongside the Rochefollet. You’ll reach a cycle path that bends right towards the hamlet of La Planche, where there is a restored watermill.

(5) Opposite the Moulin de Saint-Pierre, take a path on the right between two fences. Follow the path, which eventually leads onto a tarmac road.

(6) Cross the road and take a path that enters the forest almost opposite, slightly to the right. This path is not marked on the IGN map but appears on OSM. It follows a fence on the left then the edge of the copse towards the south-west.

On the tarmac, turn left and walk for about 400 m. Just before the sign marking the entrance to the hamlet of Le Paviot, veer right onto a path between rows of vines which, further on, makes a right-angle bend to the right. 200 m after this bend, turn left onto a dirt track and arrive at Charmeneuil.

(7) It feels as though you are crossing a farmyard. Don’t be put off by the dogs; turn left onto the tarmac road after the house and walk 500 m.

At the junction, turn left then immediately right onto a dirt track. At the end of the track, turn right and walk past the large, isolated house known as La Pifetterie.

(8) After La Pifetterie, at the crossroads, turn right and carry on straight ahead until you reach the tarmac. Then turn right and cross the hamlet of Les Judets.

(9) Almost opposite the entrance gate (stone arch) of No. 28, take the path on the right which descends towards the bottom of the Fond des Roches valley. Walk up the valley on the other side. When you reach the tarmac, turn left, walk 200 m, then take the path on the left which descends again to the bottom of the valley before the bend opposite a farm shed.

Head back up, continuing straight ahead. When you reach the tarmac, turn right and continue downhill to the D114. Turn left to walk carefully alongside the road for about a hundred metres, cross over and head down the road opposite, Chemin du Vieux Bourg.

(10) Cross the level crossing then take the first right. Pass a fishing pond then the cemetery. After passing the tennis courts, turn right, cross the railway line again and return to the starting point, which is on the right (S/E).

Notes

The route combines tarmac and dirt tracks. However, the tarmac sections are mostly farm tracks with very little traffic.

Worth a visit

The route starts in front of the École Gustave Courbet in Bussac-sur-Charente. Indeed, Gustave Courbet and Camille Corot spent several weeks at the Château de Rochemont, invited by a patron in 1862–1863.

There they painted several pictures, mainly inspired by the light on the banks of the Charente.

A superb hike, a varied route, woodland and field crossings – pure joy. Downloading the map made it easy to find your way around, as the signposts are not sufficient.

The description seems very well done, but there are no markings on the ground, so we gave up.
The yellow markings that you usually see aren’t there. We’re very disappointed.

A lovely walk, with varied terrain and a bit of an uphill climb. A chance to explore restored rural heritage sites. A pretty stream (the Rochefollet) that we often follow. I’ll take my group there...

We completed the route in fine weather; a pleasant walk with varied scenery. We came across a few other walkers.
A marked mountain bike route, but no one else out that day! The route overlaps with others (mills, aqueduct) and can be combined to make a full-day outing.

'A few difficulties in finding your way. It would be helpful to specify the names of the roads when changing direction in localities. The journey time given is overestimated, unless you get lost....
There are a few interesting heritage sites (church, castle, mills...)
A virtually identical walk is offered by Bussac Town Hall, but in the opposite direction – the ‘Route des 3 Moulins’.
