The woods, hedgerows and marshes around Geay

A circular route around the pretty, peaceful little village of Geay. The route takes you along well-maintained paths through forests and wooded countryside. You will also ride alongside the marsh.
The Charente is not far away but remains invisible.
The route has been surveyed on the ground, making it very reliable.

Description of the walk

The hike starts from the town hall. You can park in the car park, which has around ten spaces, behind the town hall (access on the right-hand side of the town hall).

(S/E) From Geay Town Hall, head towards the church. You can walk around it to admire its chevet and see its modest portal. Continue to the next fork.

(1) Leave the road on your right (return route), take the left fork and continue down towards the marsh. Reach the first crossroads after leaving Geay.

(2) Turn left, staying on the tarmac road. You will see a cultivated hill on your left and the marsh on your right. You will come to a fork in the road.

(3) Continue straight ahead on a wide dirt track until you reach the next four-way junction.

(4) Take the dirt track that climbs up to the left. Cross the tarmac road (D128) with caution and continue straight ahead on a path that enters a small wood. Continue straight ahead. Ignore the first path on the left. The path becomes a little wider and stony.
At the first fork, turn left. About 200 m further on, at the next fork, ignore the path that branches off to the left and continue straight ahead. Follow theGR® signs for about 200 m. You will come to a small tarmac road that makes a 90° turn at this point.

(5) Take this road on the left onto the tarmac. Pass through a group of houses and you will come to a wider, busier tarmac road. Take this road on the left for about 100 metres until you reach a crossroads. On the left, you will see a beautiful farm with large agricultural sheds.

(6) To access this farm on the left, take a dirt track on the right that leads across the fields. The dirt track ends at a fork in two small tarmac roads. Leave the first on the right and take the second towards a place called La Bonnière (sign). Cross it straight ahead, following the main road.
At the exit of La Bonnière, walk along an old, beautiful stone wall on your right. Do not take Rue du Traineau, which branches off to the right. Continue for about 100 metres until you reach a right-hand bend.

(7) Leave the road and take a wide dirt track on the left which crosses a small wood. After a short climb, the track comes out of the wood. You can see sixteen wind turbines opposite. You will come to a junction of three tarmac roads. Take the narrowest track opposite, which descends slightly. Pass under a double power line and join theGR® 360 which comes in on the right.

(8) Continue straight ahead on the Flow Vélo cycle path (cycle path from Sarlat to Île d'Aix). Continue straight ahead downhill. Cross a tarmac road and continue straight ahead northwards to reach the edge of a canal (the Moussard).

(9) Do not cross the canal via the bridge. Turn left and walk along the wide grassy embankment of the canal until you reach the next bridge under a double power line. Do not take the bridge, but turn left towards Geay onto a gravel path. This path is a marsh path with a canal on either side. You will arrive at a farm entrance; continue straight ahead. The small road passes in front of a wash house and joins a crossroads.

(10) Turn left onto Rue du Lavoir, then right onto Rue des Lavandières and return to the crossroads you passed on the way there.

(1) In the opposite direction to the outward journey, turn left, pass the church again and return to the town hall car park (S/E).

Many nutria in the Moussard

Very pretty village. Very pleasant route. In autumn, you can find walnuts and chestnuts along the paths. We couldn't find the wash house marked on the map, but there were no signs to guide us there.

The village of Geay is remarkable for its traditional houses, its church and its cleanliness.
This hike was a wonderful discovery.
The variety of landscapes, the wide, well-maintained and sometimes shaded paths, and the calm and serenity of the area made it very pleasant to walk along.
We tasted blackberries along the way and saw herons, two deer and a fox.
The route is very well described, but that didn't stop us from getting lost between points 9 and 10, where we couldn't find the wash house and the printed map was of no help (the icons for nearby points of interest were obscured).
We will definitely come back to explore it in another season.

No, my dear Frédérique. There are two parallel high-voltage power lines, but if you look a little further, you can see 16 wind turbines from this spot.
I went back there with a group of 19 people and everyone saw them.

A very pleasant walk through woods, fields and villages.
The directions are very precise and reliable...you can't get lost.
Great!
However, don't look for the 16 wind turbines... they're actually 16 high-voltage power lines 🤭😉
