From Sainte-Marine to Saint-Vennec via the polder and the wash houses

This route passes through numerous wetlands. The ten or so fountains and wash houses visited are, with one exception, maintained by the Mein ha Dour association with the support of the local council. Woodland and undergrowth alternate with a few tarmac sections. Some sections are not signposted. The Chapel of La Clarté (Saint-Vennec) and the farms at Roscanvel and Le Creac’h are of particular interest.

Description of the walk

(S/E) Leave Place de Grafenhausen (tourist office; access to the harbour and the chapel; restaurants and shops nearby) by heading up Rue de l’Odet on the right. Shortly after the school, opposite the bakery, take Rue du Grand Bourg. Cross Rue du Petit Bourg at a pedestrian crossing and take the tree-lined path opposite leading to the Roz wash house.

(1) Follow the path for 10 metres, then continue in the same direction along the unpaved Impasse du Roz until you reach Rue de Béréven. At the tarmac, turn left. Pass a square well (Chemin du Vieux Puits). Continue to No. 37. Turn left, then take the first right (No. 26). Leave the tarmac road and head down towards the polder.

(2) On the left is a wash house (Traon ar Ménez) in a wetland area surrounded by large bamboo. Turn right onto a straight path lined with ditches. Join a short tarmac section before crossing Rue de Kermor (watch out for traffic in summer: access to the beach). Opposite, head towards the bridle path (yellow markings), which you cross at right angles. Follow the blue trail, not the yellow one.

(3) You’ll arrive at Roscanvel Farm. In the farmyard, you’ll find three panels explaining local history. With your back to these buildings, to the west is a fountain topped with a cross and a wash house restored by Mein ha Dour. Cross the stream via a small footbridge to continue along the path that runs alongside the stream. A second footbridge features a yellow marker. At the gate at the end of the wooded path, turn left (sign for Roscanvel: protected natural site). The path crosses a pasture. Turn left onto the tarmac road at Kerlorgant. At Kerloc’h Gwen, at the stop sign, turn right and follow the road away from the Treustel for about 200 m.
Walk 400 m north: on the left is the Rhu wash house.

(4) Continue to the Route de l’Île Tudy and turn right towards Combrit. Take the cycle path for 150 m, then leave it on the right onto Rue de Menez Noas. After the lodge, turn right onto Rue de la Clarté. After 50 m, turn left onto the disused Hent Léoc track, which will take you to the Chapelle de la Clarté and the Saint-Vennec residential farm.
This remarkable religious complex features numerous points of interest. Information is available inside the chapel, which is open daily from 10am to 5pm.

(5) Continue a short way along the main road leading towards the village and turn right at the three-way junction onto Route de Kergulant. Follow the signs for the “leisure centre”. Leave the tarmac and turn left onto Chemin du Créac’h. Go slightly past the leisure centre: there is a fountain on the left

.(6) Continue along the path, leaving the sewage treatment plant on your right. At the last pond, follow a tiny stream (20 cm wide) to the left which leads to a remarkable pillar-supported wash house (Kerdec'h) situated about 50 m to the north (the entrance is not very visible).

(7) Continue in the same direction, then turn right, initially following a track. The path then follows a circular route through the undergrowth and returns almost to the starting point. Cross the stream. Leave the bridle path on the left and follow a tree-lined embankment bordering a large field. Join a stony track (Gorréquer) which you take to the left, heading north towards the dovecote.

(8) You can choose to climb to the top of the dovecote or to the viewpoint at the car park (further east) to admire and analyse the changing landscape (reclamation of the marshes).
Retrace your steps to take the Route de Kerscuntec. Pass the Kerscuntec farm and continue straight on despite the Yellow Cross. The road joins the Route de Kermor.

(9) At the junction before Kerharo, opposite, there is a private wash house and a pumping station that once supplied the village of Île Tudy. Turn right and head down towards Kermor.

(10) Shortly after the Kerguillec junction, on the right below the road, there is a small fountain.
At Kermor Bihan, rejoin the original route by turning left. Follow the same straight path for 300 m.

(2) Instead of retracing your steps (Béréven), cross the stream and take the path that runs alongside the marshes via a boardwalk, passing the Hellès campsite. Continue southwards along the edge of natural meadows until you reach the dune. You can access the beach opposite to enjoy the view.

(11) Turn left before the car park entrance. The coastal path behind the dune leads to a second car park, at the end of which you reach Rue de la Plage.
Head straight north for just under a kilometre until you reach the car park where you started, Place Grafenhausen (S/E).

Notes

The route passes ten fountains and wash houses. All but one are maintained by the Mein ha Dour association.
The numerous wetlands do not require the use of wellington boots, except perhaps after heavy rain.
At (2), the route can be shortened by 20 minutes by retracing your steps towards Béréven and Le Roz.

Worth a visit

(1) The Roz wash house has two basins, a fountain and two cast-iron pots for washing clothes (“chidourne” in Breton).
(2) Traon ar Ménez fountain (at the foot of Béréven).
(3) In the courtyard of this farm in Roscanvel, you will find three panels explaining local history. Set back from these buildings is a fountain topped with a cross and a wash house restored by Mein ha Dour.
(4) Rhu wash house.
(5) Chapel of La Clarté: a cross, a chapel dating from the 15th and 17th centuries with stained-glass windows, statues, a Way of the Cross and interesting banners, a miraculous fountain and a rustic altar. The chapel is open all year round from 10 am to 5 pm. A stop here is a must.
(6) Créac’h wash house fountain, designed by Mein ha dour.
(7) Kerdec'h pillar wash house
(8) Dovecote and viewpoint with explanations on the formation of the polder and the evolution of the coastline.
(9) Kerharo wash house. Pumping station supplying Ile Tudy.
(10) Small fountain at Kerguillec
(11) Car park at Sainte-Marine beach

Our walking group of about ten people was already familiar with part of this route, but we discovered new sections and, above all, some wash houses that aren’t always easy to spot.
The fountains at Roscanvel and Saint-Vennec have each been fitted with a statue that fits perfectly into the empty niches.
The Notre-Dame de la Clarté chapel, a rare chapel that is always open, is well worth a visit: a small free leaflet helps you appreciate the various features.

A few short muddy patches, nothing too difficult: to be expected in a polder area in winter.
Thank you for this pleasant afternoon.

A lovely walk with wash houses, fountains and chapels, though a bit too much road for my liking
At point 11, we continued along the GR34 and passed by the Pointe de Combrit and the fort...
Thanks for this route
