From Saegmatt to Gaschney via the Stolz Ablass and Frankenthal waterfalls

This is a beautiful hike that climbs along the Petite Fecht, offering views of the Stolz Ablass waterfalls, then the Frankenthal and its peat bog. The return journey is via the Gaschney, taking the Bloye trail.

Description of the walk

The starting point is the Saegmatt car park, accessible from Stosswhir via the Petite Fecht valley.

(S/E) Take the wide path marked with yellow discs towards Frankenthal and the Ablass waterfalls. Running alongside the Petite Fecht, it allows you to admire several waterfalls of varying sizes and leads you to a wide path.

(1) Take this path to the left, cross two bridges/footbridges over the Petite Fecht and admire the waterfalls. Continue for a few dozen metres.

(2) Don't miss the continuation of the Yellow Disc trail, which branches off to the right in a hairpin bend. Continue uphill through a beautiful forest, then bear left a little further on to join a forest path.

(3) Follow it for a few hundred metres. At the hairpin bend to the right, continue straight ahead. The Yellow Disc trail passes another footbridge, then further on leaves the forest and joins the GR®531 (Blue Rectangle), with the Frankenthal farm on the right. In season, you can have lunch at the farm (a few simple dishes).

(4) I recommend a short detour to the peat bog located about 200 m from the farm in the direction of the rock trail (Blue Rectangle markings then Yellow Disc on the left). Then retrace your steps and pass by the farm again.

(4) Take the GR®531 towards Gaschney (marked with a blue rectangle/red triangle). After a few hairpin bends, you will come to an intersection.

(5) Leave the red triangle path on your right (which climbs towards the Dagobert cave and Schaefferthal) and continue left on the GR®531 towards Gaschney. You are now on the Bloye trail.

(6) Please note: although the Bloye trail is not as technical as the Roches trail, it does have a few difficult and vertiginous sections that are not recommended for people who are poorly equipped or prone to vertigo.
At the end of the Bloye trail, cross a wide path and continue on the GR®531, Blue Rectangle, to Gaschney.

(7) At Gaschney, you can have lunch at the Gaschney farmhouse inn or simply stop for a snack.
To do so, head towards the road, park on the left, then turn right towards the refuge and farmhouse inn.

(8) Then retrace your steps, walk past a chalet on the left and rejoin the path you left earlier.

(7) Ignore it and head straight ahead, then turn right onto a Red Cross-marked trail leading down to Silberwald, Gaschneyried and Stosswhir. It quickly joins a junction with a small trail.

(9) There are two options:
1) Take this path on the left, where a sign indicates Gaschneyried via the bog,
2) Option chosen on the map: continue straight ahead and, at the crossroads, turn left until you reach the right-hand bend near an information board about the bog.

(10) Admire the Gaschneyried bog, then continue along the wide stony path marked with a Red Cross sign, which continues downhill towards Saegmatt and Stosswihr. After about a kilometre on this uncomfortable path, in a wide left-hand bend, a path branches off to the right.

(11) Turn onto this path and continue to follow the Red Cross markings. It descends in wide zigzags towards Stosswihr until it intersects with the Chevalet Rouge path.

(12) Leave the Red Cross trail on your right and follow the Red Chevalet trail (towards Saegmatt) which, after a wide right-hand bend, crosses the Petite Fecht and joins a wide path coming from the left before returning to the car park (S/E).

A very beautiful hike, but quite difficult even though it is marked as moderate.
We had seen that there was a significant elevation gain, but we didn't know that it would be quite difficult (except for the Bloye trail, which was marked as difficult). But even after that, it was quite technical for people in their seventies.
We had already done the rock trail, which is marked as dangerous.
We had lunch at the Gaschney farmhouse inn, which is very welcoming and serves excellent food.
