Description of the walk

Park near the sports hall in Raddon and Chapendu

Chemin des Moines

(S) Leave the sports hall via Rue du Stade and continue straight on until you cross the Breuchin via the bridge on Rue du Moulin. Carry on straight until you reach Route de Saint-Bresson. Turn right, then, a little further on, left into Rue du Rang de Fahys. Follow this street until you come to a signposted path on your left: Pierre aux Sacrifices.

(1) Follow the path, which climbs quite steeply. Turn right when you meet a path coming from the left. Just before a Fork in the road, you’ll reach the Pierre aux Sacrifices. It’s situated slightly above the path, on the left.

(2) At the fork in the road, take the path on the left (the one on the right is cut off before Amage). Carry on straight ahead and ignore the first path that crosses yours at right angles. Carry on climbing until you reach a small flat area. Then take a path to the right which literally plunges down towards Amage. Follow this path until you reach the road from Raddon to Amage, where you’ll turn left. You’ll come to a small picnic shelter if you’d like to stop for a picnic.

(3) Starting from the shelter on the left at the entrance to Amage when coming from Raddon, head towards Amage Church, keeping to the left-hand side of the road. Ignore the first junction (Rue des Champs Pey) and turn left at the second street you come to. Walk past Amage Town Hall (on your left), then past Place de la Gare, and carry on straight ahead. At the first junction, carry on straight ahead onto Route du Tacot. Cross a small bridge over a stream and carry on until you reach Rue des Trois Fontaines (the road towards Sainte-Marie-en-Chanois). Turn left.

(4) Carefully cross the road and take the first street on your right. Immediately turn left onto Chemin de Saint-Roch. Walk until you come to a wide path running perpendicular to the path you are following. Turn right towards the Chapelle Saint-Roch.

(5) Return to the path you left, then turn right onto the Chemin des Champs de Pierres. At the end of the path, turn left onto Rue de la Proiselière. Cross the Grande Rue carefully and take the signposted road opposite: Saint-Colomban. After a wide right-hand bend, the road begins to climb quite steeply. Follow it until, at the bend to the left, you find a path on your right.

(6) Follow this path until you come to a path on your right that descends steeply. Take this path and, at the first fork in the road, head left. Ignore a path branching off to your right. When you come to a path joining from the right, head left. The path takes a hairpin bend to the right. Shortly afterwards, turn left and follow the path which will take you to the Saint-Colomban Chapel.

(7) After a break, take the path towards Annegray which starts behind the pond. The path winds gently downhill until it meets another path, which you’ll take by turning left. Cross a stream, then, after passing at the foot of the cliffs, you’ll reach a road which you should follow carefully(it’s a busy road), keeping to the left until you reach the entrance to Breuches-les-Faucogney.

(8) Cross the road carefully and turn right onto a street that runs diagonally. Turn right at the first junction and follow the street straight ahead. At the first crossroads, turn left to cross a bridge over the Breuchin.

(9) A little further on, turn left onto La Voivre. Follow the road straight ahead until you come to another road, running perpendicular to the one you’re on. Turn right onto this road, then left at the first Fork in the road you come to. You’ll arrive at Le Breuil d’Annegray, your final destination.

(E) All that remains is for you to explore the site.

Notes

Please note! This route is not circular, and there is no public transport connecting Raddon and Annegray. Make sure you arrange a way back!

Parking is available near the sports hall in Raddon.

The path is signposted (more or less clearly) by signs featuring a monk with his walking stick.

The second part of this walk, starting from Breuches, is entirely on quiet roads. Those who dislike tarmac won’t enjoy it!

Worth a visit

  • The site of the Chapel of Saint-Colomban is a peaceful spot where it’s lovely to stop for a while.
  • Annegray site: here you’ll find a general information board, a chapel, the remains of the Priory of Saint John the Baptist, and Merovingian coffins.
