From Pont Saint-Pierre to the Priory of the Two Lovers

An invigorating hike with remarkable views overlooking the Seine, the Poses-Léry leisure centre and Pont de l'Arche. Pass close to three 17th-century châteaux: the Manoir de Senneville, the Manoir de Canteloup and the Château des Deux Amants, the setting for the legend of Raoul de Bonnemare and Mathilde.
Stroll along the Seine for 1,500 metres. Final stroll along the Andelle and the mills of Romilly-sur-Andelle.

Description of the walk

Parking on Avenue du Château in Pont-Saint-Pierre.

(S/E) Head towards the main street, turn left and cross the Andelle. At the end of the Grande Rue, turn right onto Rue des Hautes Rives and continue for about 100 metres.
Our route follows thePR® (yellow markings).

(1) Turn left into a dead-end street that turns into a path and crosses the railway line. After a few steps, the path climbs into the Bois de la Mouquillonne. Continue to Route du Plessis.

(2) When you reach the junction with Route du Plessis, do not take it, but turn right onto a path that crosses fields. At the end, turn left onto Route des Deux Amants, take the first street on the right (Rue des Friches) and, at the end, turn left onto Rue de Fescot. When you reach Place René Daran, in front of the town hall of Amfreville-sous-les-Monts, turn right. Pass in front of the town hall and, at the next intersection, turn slightly right to reach the top of Côte aux Os.

(3) Turn left into the street of the same name, then follow Rue du Grand Jardin to the end. When this street meets Route de Vatteville, take this road on the right, then immediately turn right into Rue de la Cavée.
After a few metres, take a path on the left across the field towards the village of Senneville. Pass behind the manor farm and, after a right-hand bend, you will come out onto the Route de Senneville. Follow this road to the right and pass in front of the Senneville manor house (free to visit the exterior).

(4) Pass the cemetery and the church and, at the exit of the hamlet, turn right onto theGR®2(poorly cleared path). One kilometre further on, you will reach La Roche à Roline (very beautiful view of the valley).

TheGR® then descends towards Val Hamet. When you reach Chemin des Côteaux, turn left.

(6) Leave theGR® (see the sporty alternative in the Practical Information section). Continue down Chemin des Côteaux. The route crosses the D19 (take care) and, almost opposite, slightly to the right, takes Impasse des Basaches, which leads to the banks of the Seine.
At the end of the path, turn right (private property, keep animals on a leash) and follow the riverbank to the third path on the right, Impasse du Bac.

(7) Turn right into this cul-de-sac, which leads to the Route du Val Pitan, which you cross, and climb the Chemin des Monts, which joins theGR®2.

(8) Take it to the left. After a short climb, the path arrives at a T-junction and goes left to run horizontally along the cliff, then arrives at a fork.

(9) TheGR® descends towards the Seine; leave it by taking the path on the right that climbs towards the Château des Deux Amants.

(10) On the climb, there is a beautiful view of the Seine valley and the Canteloup manor house. Arrive at the foot of a viewpoint (closed) and walk along the wall of the Château des Deux Amants, then that of the former priory (explanatory panels). Take the Route des Deux Amants towards the east. After 500 m, rejoin thePR® (yellow markings).

(11) At the edge of the woods, thePR® turns left and, at the next crossroads, the path descends towards the Andelle valley. ThePR® continues, turning sharply left onto the Sentier du Val aux Lièvres, which leads to the railway line. After crossing it, turn right into Rue des Hautes Rives and arrive at Rue du Chemin des Ponts.

(12) Take this street and cross a canal, then the Andelle.

(13) Immediately after crossing the Andelle, turn right to follow it along the Sentier du Rivage, then the Sentier du Moulin de la Nation. After crossing a small bridge, and after 100 metres, turn right through a barrier.

(14) Return to the Andelle and continue to follow it to the bridge, going around the Moulin Pouchet, then turn left to reach Rue Blingue. Take this street on the left until you reach an old wash house.

(15) Part of this street runs alongside a small canal. Retrace your steps a little, take Rue Saint-Georges on the left until you reach Sentier Monnier, then turn right. This path leads to Chemin de la Planche du Moulin Cabot and turns left. Stay on this path until you reach Rue de la Planquette, cross it and take Sentier des Jardins du Levant opposite, following it until you reach Ruelle des Jardins on the left.

(16) Follow this alley to Rue Saint-George and turn right onto it. Rue Saint-Georges joins Rue de la Libération: continue to the right and, in the right-hand bend, you can visit the 12th-century Saint-Georges Church.

(17) Turn right onto Rue de la Libération and follow it to Collège de la Côte des Deux Amants.

(18) Take Chemin aux Bœufs, which branches off slightly to the left. After passing the cemetery, the road turns into a path and, at the end of the houses, comes to an intersection with a path that descends to the right (stairs). Take this path, which leads to Rue de Fontaine Guérard.

(19) First turn left then right to continue along the small street opposite and, when it turns, leave it and go straight ahead along a path which, after a small bridge, turns right and then left along the sports fields. After passing a final mill and crossing a branch of the Andelle, you will reach Avenue du Château, the starting point (S/E).

Notes

The car park on Avenue du Château is shaded.
There is a bakery near the start of the hike on Grande Rue.
There are no shops between the start of Pont-Saint-Pierre and Romilly-sur-Andelle.
Visit the exterior of the Senneville manor house.
There is a tap in the cemetery opposite the château.

Sporty alternative: (6) If you want to stay at the top of the cliffs, continue on theGR®. Climb over a fence and follow the trail that climbs steeply towards Roche Bardin and joins the Côte de la Motte road, which you take on the left. The road runs along the top of the cliffs overlooking the Seine for 500 m. TheGR® descends steeply to the left to the pretty little church of Amfreville-sous-les-Monts and, after a few metres on the Val Hamet road, climbs up the Plessis road, which it immediately leaves on the left. After a short climb, leave theGR® on the left, taking "le Chemin d'une Seconde Jeunesse" (signposted) to Haut du Val Pitan, where you will rejoin theGR® just before the point (8).

Worth a visit

  • Near the starting point, in Pont-Saint-Pierre, there is a 15th-century castle surrounded by moats, which replaced an 11th-century castle built by William the Conqueror and Henry I Beauclerc. Unfortunately, it is not accessible (private property).
  • (4) 17th-century Senneville Manor, dovecote, pond, free exterior visits, interior visits of the manor possible (check opening hours).
  • La Roche à Roline, remarkable viewpoint.
  • La Roche Bardin: (in the variant, after the point; (6)) climbing, paragliding take-off point.
  • (8) Impasse du Bac, view of the Grande Ile.
  • (10) Viewpoint over the Seine valley, the Andelle river and the Canteloup manor house (17th century), paragliding take-off point, Château des Deux Amants and Prieuré nearby (17th century). There are information panels explaining the legend and the buildings.
  • The legend of the two lovers.

Raoul de Bonnemare, son of a minor local lord (16th-century château), was in love with Mathilde, the daughter of a great lord.
Mathilde's father, Robert, demanded that Raoul carry her up the hill in order to win her hand in marriage. Raoul did as he was asked, but when he reached the top, exhausted by the effort, he collapsed.
Mathilde, inconsolable, threw herself off the cliff.
According to legend, Mathilde's father, consumed by remorse, had a marble tomb built for the lovers and a priory in their memory at the top of the hill climbed by Raoul, which has since been named "Côte des Deux Amants" (Lovers' Hill).

  • (15) Old wash house in Romilly.
  • (16) Saint-Georges Church (12th-19th centuries) with a 12th-century nave and bell tower, a 13th-century choir, a statue of Saint George (1450) and a wooden gallery. Near the church, you can see a bell that is a replica of the Bastille carillon, which was cast in Romilly after the Revolution.

A magnificent hike with remarkable views of the Seine, the islands and the Poses dam. The Seine at 180 degrees! Unique! The hills are quite challenging, but it's definitely worth it. The exterior of the first manor house is accessible, the façade is remarkable and don't miss the small pond and its geese on the left as you enter, bucolic! To see the Château de Canteloup, you have to go down to the bottom and the Manoir des 2 Amants is not visible behind its walls. However, the trail is very varied and there are many forest passages, ideal when it's hot. Without a doubt, this is the hike to do in the area.
We also cut the end short by heading straight to the church after the very peaceful and pretty walk along the Andelle. The church is worth seeing. Then head back towards the rear of the church to pick up the path that leads back to the Pont Saint Pierre castle.
Thank you for a very enjoyable time on this trail!

A very beautiful hike. Magnificent views. Very pleasant trails. The end of the route can be shortened from point 14 to the start, as there is a lot of tarmac.
Many thanks to the author.

A very beautiful parish-specific to Brittany hike. We always add a few kilometres, well, two, we took a wrong turn on the way down but we managed to find our way back. Otherwise, beautiful views of the Seine, Lery-Poses and the horizon! It was 18 May 2023 and the weather was beautiful! Thank you, Visorando!

A beautiful hike in lovely dry, cold weather. Frost still present in the morning and mist over the Seine, magnificent landscapes that quickly changed with the sun offering a splendid panorama, especially at La Roline!
A varied hike with pleasant elevation changes.
Thank you to the author for this beautiful route.
