From Lagny-sur-Marne to Meaux

The Chemin de Saint-Colomban leaves the built-up areas behind to take more rural paths dotted with typical Brie villages between Lagny and Meaux. The route crosses the pleasant countryside of Brie, running alongside the canals and banks of the Marne.

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: Le Chemin Européen de Saint-Colomban

Description of the walk

(S) We leave the centre of Lagny-sur-Marne, heading north, via Rue des Marchés then Rue du Chemin de Fer, and arrive at the banks of the Marne.

(1) At the bridge, turn right onto Quai Saint-Père and follow theGR®14A(red and white markings) with the Marne on your left. Follow the river for about 2.2 km, ignoring all turnings on the right and passing a leisure park.

(2) Move away from the riverbank by turning right. You’ll come out onto Chemin de Quincangrogne (tarmac) and follow it to the left. Further on, the road is called Ancien Chemin de Meaux. Continue along this road until you reach the entrance to the Jardin de sculptures de la Dhuys, at the junction with Rue de la Marne.

(3) First turn left then right and cross the Sculpture Garden. Pass the La Dhuys footbridge on your left and continue along theGR® and the banks of the Marne. Pass Chalifert Lock No. 14, turn right, go through a gate and ignore thefirst path on the right.

(4) At the second junction, take thefirst path on the left. Walk past a large house and head uphill, ignoring a path branching off to the right. Cross the D45 road and continue straight ahead. Cross the Route de Lesches and take the small road opposite which slopes down to the left.

(5) At the fork, turn left and let theGR® head off to the right. Pass under a railway bridge and reach lock no. 13 at Lesches-Coupvray.

(6) Follow the Meaux to Chalifert Canal on your right. Turn left just before thefirst bridge to come out onto a road.

N.B. Situation as of June 2022. The path on the opposite bank is heavily overgrown and very difficult to follow. Contrary to the route description, do not use the bridge to cross the canal.

(7) Cross the road, take the path opposite and turn right to reach the canal bank. Follow the canal on the right-hand side. Pass under a railway line.

(8) Go under the road bridge and follow the canal on your right until the next bridge.

(9) Cross the bridge (Rue de Condé) and immediately turn left to return to the canal bank. Walk past the Château de Condé.

(10) In Condé-Sainte-Libiaire, leave theGR®14Atemporarily to cross the bridge. Turn immediately right and walk along a strip of land between the Marne on your left and the canal on your right.

(11) At a place called Chalet des Rouazes, rejoin theGR® at the bridge and continue straight on, keeping the canal on your right. Pass under a motorway viaduct and reach another bridge at Mareuil-les-Meaux.

(12) Cross the bridge and turn immediately left to walk alongside the canal on your left. Ignore the next bridge and continue straight on.

(13) We come out onto Rue Georges Renard and follow it to the left. Ignore a turn-off on the left, stay on Rue Georges Renard and move away from the canal. Cross Rue François de Tessan (D360) and follow it to the left to cross lock no. 12 at Meaux.

(14) Immediately turn right onto Quai du Maréchal Mortier. Follow the lock and then the Marne after a left-hand bend. Turn left again, following a canal, rejoin the D360 and cross the canal.

(15) Immediately turn right again and follow Quai Charles Deboeuf. Pass under Pont Foch and follow the Marne once more. Pass under Pont Neuf and reach Pont du Marché.

(16) Take the bridge to cross the Marne. Walk along Quai Victor Hugo (access to Meaux station on the left, 300m away) and enter the town centre via Rue du Grand Cerf. Turn left into Rue du Général Leclerc and head towards Saint-Étienne Cathedral (E).

A very interesting route, but there’s too much mud and too many areas that are inaccessible due to the Marne being in flood at the moment. We often have to improvise, but we manage. There’s a section where we walk between the Chalifert Canal and the Marne, which has completely burst its banks, and the most surprising thing is that there are people living there, right by the water’s edge.

A lovely 22-kilometre walk with varied scenery and few difficulties, and only a slight elevation gain. There was a brief moment of uncertainty after lock no. 14 – you really must follow the GR.
The signposts were very clear, as was the route on the map.

A very pleasant walk along the water. The route description isn’t always easy to follow, but you just need to stick to the GR trail, which is fairly well signposted (especially along the Marne or the Chalifert Canal), to find your way; it really isn’t complicated.

An easy walk enjoyed in perfect weather.
The tranquillity of the riverbank, with a few beautiful boats passing by and the discovery of the Dhuys statues.
After lock no. 14, the route description is rather unclear. There are two barriers, one on the road and the other at the entrance to the path. You must follow the GR markings carefully. The path leading uphill is quite rutted and cannot be easy in wet weather.
The path running alongside the canal after lock no. 13 is lined with tall grass.
At point 7, after crossing the bridge, you leave the GR and the path that winds along the canal sometimes runs very close to the edge. Take care.
To round off the day, we reached the Canal de l’Ourcq via the Pont Neuf and then the Trilport station.

A lovely, varied walk, featuring the sculptures by J. Servières, with the section of the Balisera Canal running through a tunnel.
I wanted to point out that, at point 7, the left bank of the canal is impassable and, in fact, the GR route stays on the right bank, so we didn’t cross the bridge.
I thought that Saint Colomban would feature more prominently on this route, but unfortunately that is not the case.

A lovely walk along the Marne and its canal. I took a small path on the left between Quincangrogne and the sculptures to avoid the tarmac.
If you have time, don’t forget to visit the Great War Museum in Meaux.
