Marne loop around Thorigny and the Statues of La Dhuys

A circular walk from Lagny-Thorigny station, with a beautiful variety of landscapes. Beautiful view of the Marne valley from the cute little village of Carnetin. Chalifert tunnel and lock. And the exceptional Dhuys sculpture garden, which alone is worth the trip.

Description of the walk

Departure from Lagny-Thorigny station (Transilien line P).

(S/E) Exit the station on the north side and follow theGR®14A(poorly marked...). Take Rue de la Madeleine, which climbs quite steeply. Higher up, join Rue de Claye (D418) in a curve and follow it north. Pass a first crossroads.

(1) At the next crossroads, turn left onto Rue des Guayes (signposted as a dead end). Pass a few houses and continue straight ahead on the stony path (closed by a barrier) which descends into the fields. When you reach a crossroads, take the path almost opposite (a slight zigzag to the right and left) and continue on the path between the fences (ostrich farm on the right).

(2) After passing the corner of the fence, take a path heading north-northwest at the boundary between the fields and the forest (leave theGR® trail on your right along a fairly deep ditch and on an unmaintained path). After about 450m, turn right onto the well-marked path (muddy in wet weather) that climbs into the forest. You will arrive at the Aqueduc de la Dhuys, recognisable by its two paths separated by a grassy median, and follow it to the left for about 100 metres.

(3) Leave the aqueduct and take the path on the right which, after a right-hand bend, quickly turns into a lane leading to the village of Carnetin. Pass the pretty little church and continue opposite towards the cross which marks the viewpoint (information panel on the first battle of the Marne).

(4) Continue north-east and descend a steep but well-maintained path to the D418. Cross it and continue straight ahead on the dirt track which joins a good paved road. Turn left to go around the fence (danger of underground quarries) then right onto one of the paths that descends towards the Marne.

(5) Turn right and follow the river on your left. After about 2.5 km, leave the wooded area and you will arrive in farmland. Leave thePR® trail as it climbs up to the right and continue straight ahead along the Marne for another 400 m.

(6) When following the riverbank requires you to take a poorly marked path, stay on the correct path, which returns slightly back. At the next crossroads, turn left (you will rejoin thePR® on the map). Leave the first path that climbs to the right, then another that goes left towards the Marne. Take a right-angle turn and reach the railway line. Turn left and follow it to the riverbank. Turn right and pass under two bridges in succession.

(7) After the second bridge, turn right onto the steep climb that goes up the old railway line (very steep, difficult in wet weather). Then turn right to cross the bridge over the Marne and descend on the right. Continue south on the correct path that passes in front of the Ermitage (cabaret).

(8) At the crossroads, take the road on the right that descends towards the Chalifert lock. Before reaching the lock, turn right along the basin to take a look at the Chalifert tunnel, the last section of the Meaux canal at Chalifert.
Rejoin theGR®14Aand follow it along the Marne to the Jardin des Sculptures de la Dhuys.

(9) After taking the time to admire the sculptures, continue downstream on theGR® which follows a paved road (shaded, very little traffic). N.B. You may prefer an irregularly maintained path that winds between the Marne and the road. When you reach the Moulin de Quincangrogne, continue on the road until the next intersection.

(10) Leave theGR® and take the path that leads to the banks of the Marne. This is a narrow, well-marked path, but it can be dangerous as it is very close to the edge of the riverbank, with some areas that have collapsed due to erosion and flooding from the Marne. Follow the banks of the Marne until you reach the paved road. Pass the water sports centre and continue to the first bridge over the Marne: cross the bridge and continue straight ahead to the station (S/E).

Practical information

Most of the route is easy on good paths. However, some sections may be considered difficult, especially in wet weather: good, grippy shoes are essential!

N.B. (7) The climb may be considered difficult for many. I have included it for the tunnel and the Chalifert lock. However, you can avoid this climb by continuing along the right bank of the Marne and joining the (9) via the newly built footbridge over the Marne.

A beautiful walk that takes you to the heights of the pretty village of Carnetin, where you can enjoy panoramic views of the Marne valley and the Chalifert lock.
Avoid point no. 7, which is a very difficult climb (and can be very dangerous in wet weather) on the old railway line.
It is better to stay on the PR and go to point no. 9 to access the sculpture garden via the footbridge (GR15).
The sculpture garden is a marvel. It's worth seeing just for the pleasure of your eyes!

Thanks to Claude L2 for posting this beautiful hike, just 25 minutes from Paris East👍

I didn't enjoy this loop at all. It hadn't rained for a while, but the path was still very muddy for almost half of the hike.

What's more, I didn't find the route particularly interesting, but that was probably because the weather wasn't great and I'm not used to "hikes" in the Paris region, which are more like walks. I'm quite disappointed because I was expecting to be in the forest at least, but that wasn't the case at all.

The only thing I liked was crossing the railway line.

We took this walk on a sunny day, which made it even more beautiful.
However, some sections can be very muddy in rainy weather.
I would definitely recommend it.

A walk taken in the middle of the week. This is one of my favourite loops in the Paris region. You quickly leave Lagny behind at the start of the walk and soon find yourself in the middle of fields. The village of Carnetin is as peaceful and charming as ever, and the banks of the Marne are very pretty (although very muddy given the previous day's weather, so make sure you wear good shoes). The second part of the walk is also very nice, along a little path that runs alongside the houses.
I still hesitate at point 7, but you have to go along a section of the path that is closed by the SNCF. Otherwise, I would definitely do this ride again!

the path along the Marne was muddy and flooded, so we went back up to follow the Aqueduct path to Dampmart, where we went back down via the Chemin des Garances and rejoined the circuit at the Chemin du Champ Breton. It's a very pleasant little detour and the circuit as a whole is very good and interesting

Hello
I noticed that there is a passage over a bridge, an old railway line. The area is private property and belongs to the SNCF (French national railway company), so there are many risks, and the bridge has not been maintained....

Hike completed in heavy weather. Muddy ground, saturated grass. Several falls, particularly in the first two kilometres of forest (ascent) and on the edges of the marl where motorbikes had left deep ruts that became muddy in the rain. Overall, it was hell. I always finish an hour early, but I went over time because of slow and uncertain progress. However, I have no regrets. Carnetin is still worth seeing: rich history, remarkable heritage and a breathtaking viewpoint.
As it is hunting season, we unfortunately had to proceed at the sound of a gunshot. The statue park is perplexing: coitus, fertility and monstrosity seem to be the artist's themes. The end of the walk in Lagny reveals some exceptional houses and quays bustling with boaters (a really tacky marina) but above all the activism of the FFCK, which promotes a sporting and environmentally friendly river lifestyle. To be revisited in good weather.

A pleasant walk along the banks of the Marne, discovering the Dhuys sculpture garden. In dry weather, the classification of this walk as "difficult" seems a little exaggerated, as most of the route is fairly easy.

A very pleasant and varied route, done in dry weather so no mud, but it must be a bit tricky in some places when wet

Very pretty route, although very muddy on the first part (even though it hadn't rained recently, mainly because of the paths used by large vehicles, I think). The sculpture garden is incredible, the banks of the Marne are very charming, and you can hear and see lots of birds. And I always enjoy seeing bridges, tunnels and railways. The route isn't very busy overall, but it gets busy towards the end on the way back to the station — although it must be said that the sun was shining.

I don't remember the exact date of my walk, but it was definitely in the last two weeks of August when it was very hot in the afternoon. The route is quite shaded, making it pleasant. As it was a weekday, we didn't see many people. The village of Carnetin was charming in the sunshine and the Dhuys park was a surprise. This park reminds me of the Vallée des Saints (Brittany), smaller of course, but twenty-three years ahead of its time and created by just one person. The route is very pleasant, but I would advise against climbing the railway embankment in wet weather. It is better to stay on the same bank until you reach the Dhuys statues and, I would even say, until Thorigny, because between the road (which is quiet) on the first section and the poorly maintained path wedged between the fences of the backyards of houses and the scrub on the banks of the Marne on the second section, the left bank seemed more pleasant for walking, but you miss the Quincangrogne mill, but nothing prevents you from coming back :-) In any case, thank you for this day-long circular walk, which allows you to take the train back, very practical.
